Hope: Why the power of desire is crucial for living
Sometimes ‘hope’ as we know it, can seem like the poor relation to motivation. Cynics may feel that hope is a waste of time as you can end up feeling more let down if things don’t turn out well. They may have a point, but not a helpful one.
‘Once you choose hope, anything’s possible’ — (Christopher Reeve)
In my experience, the importance of hope is that it can trigger us to start seeing and believing there is a chance of reaching a desired outcome in the first place.
However, without being able to imagine this in your mind’s eye, you cannot expect to want to move forward. You wouldn’t expect someone to feel motivated by a feeling of nothingness or the unknown — it has no ‘pull’.
‘May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears’ — (Nelson Mandela)
Humans need to desire and visualise ‘something’, (not referring to material things, but experiences, situations or gaining a new skill, for example) and we must believe this can be had in reality. The ‘something’ has to be personally meaningful and evoke passion or interest to switch on our hope.
‘To live without hope is to cease to live’ — (Fyodor Dostoyevski)
During a long period of hopelessness, we are much more likely to become depressed, tired and indifferent to life in general, and with good reason — We don’t believe anything good can happen.
This is why it’s important we pay attention to, and try to arrest any feeling of hopelessness before it gets out of hand and turns into a serious monster.
‘Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies’ — (Stephen King)
Even if you believe that there is no hope for yourself, it really is just a powerful illusion and it’s worth noting that there are always other people who would see your situation and options quite differently, simply because they have lived a different life; so trying to think like an outsider can really help.
Fortunately, the world and our feelings are ever-changing, so as long as you keep an open mind and go looking for ideas, experiences and people that inspire and ‘light you up’, the easier it is to feel and stay hopeful about the future.
‘Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars’ — (Norman Vincent Peale)
Here are some other uplifting ways to see ‘HOPE’, and I trust these words will be inspiring, plus my related poem, ‘Hope Will Be Your Friend’, below.
Hold On, Pain Ends Help Other People Excel Have Only Positive Expectations Happiness On Purpose Excites Have Only Peaceful Endings
‘The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope’ — (Barack Obama).
