Mindfulness Practice: Wake Up the Body First

A simple way to connect to the present moment with pleasure

“Rejoicing in ordinary things is not sentimental or trite. It actually takes guts.” Pema Chödrön

Do you wake up struggling to get out of bed, anxious about the day to come, or with much joy and pleasure as you connect to infinite possibilities of being?

Here is a mindfulness practice that I actually do every single day. It is a simple practice that brings us energy and joy, and it only takes five minutes.

This is one of the 50 mindfulness practices that I share in my book, “Bullshit-free Mindfulness”. Get your copy here — it is available in print and ebook formats. Have fun!

Wake Up the Body First

What is the very first thing you do when you wake up? On one hand, it’s not unusual to wake up and stay in bed thinking about what one is to do on that day, reaching out to the phone to check messages and emails. On the other hand, it is a productivity hack to get out of bed as soon as one wakes up.

This week, we are doing it differently.

Instead, we are going to connect with our bodies before we get out of bed.

In such a mental society, we tend to operate too much in our heads and force our bodies to do what our heads want to do. This week is all about giving attention and providing love to our bodies first.

This exercise is simple: engage with your body as soon as you wake up, while still lying in bed. This can be in multiple ways: you can give yourself a soft massage, or breathe deeply into your belly, feeling the air going from your nose to your core. You can play with your feet and feel the pleasure that the texture of your sheets can give you, or play with your tongue on the roof of your mouth. You are free to give yourself some soft touches in any part of your body that is calling for care.

The way we are connecting to our bodies here is through presence, sensation, pleasure, curiosity, and care. We are not pushing our bodies from one side to the other, forcing ourselves out of bed. Let your body know how precious it is for you, and that you are there to take care of it. Explore and have fun!

In Short

1. As soon as you wake up, still lying in bed, take some time to connect with your body.

2. No phones, no thoughts, no worries. Just the present moment, and your physical body.

3. Give yourself some self-care, explore what you feel in different parts of your body, play with your feet, be curious and follow sensation.
