Mila & Sid’s Backyard Adventure: Finding Eve
A short story

It was one day before the New Year — New Year’s Eve. Sid’s ears pointed upwards and his nose twitched. He heard running water and smelled manuka honey shampoo. “Siiiiid!” Mila shouted. “Where is he, mama?”.
Mila headed to the backyard to solve the mystery of the missing friend. She looked under the nectarine tree and in the pumpkin patch. She rested on a pumpkin twice her size. “Poo-ee!” she screeched. Sid had left a clue and so, she knew she was on the right track.
Mila crept around the mandarin tree. Shplerk! Overripe mandarin squished between her toes. “That’s hilarious!” she said, cracking up to herself. Mila climbed the raggedy ladder of her colourful treehouse and searched through her finger binoculars. She saw a tail poking up out of the strawberry patch. “Sid!” she called. “There you are!”.
Mila slid down the puddle-filled slide, and ignoring the wet feeling on her bum, ran with open arms to her best friend, Sid. “What are you doing here, Sid?” asked Mila. Sid directed her attention to the little creature stuck like a pāua to his side.
“Mama, look who Sid found!”. A shivering, black ball of fur and bones was nestled into Mila’s arms. “She’s my friend,” Mila told her mama proudly. Sid cleaned the little kitten with his tongue and kissed her with his snout. Mama gave her a drink and some food for her rumbling tummy. Mila named her Eve after the day she found her.
Sid wrapped around Eve like a woolly blanket to keep her safe and warm, and the pair fell asleep in front of the fire. The smell of toasty manuka honey flavoured fur lingered through the air.
As Mila drifted off to sleep, she dreamed of the fun she would have with her best friend, Sid, and her new friend, Eve. She knew that today was just the beginning of many backyard adventures with her friends.
