Summary

The article provides a workaround for using the new "Vary (Region)" inpainting feature on previously upscaled images in Midjourney by adjusting the zoom level.

Abstract

Midjourney has introduced a new inpainting feature called "Vary (Region)" that allows users to edit specific areas of an image. However, this feature is only available after an image has been upscaled, which can only be done once. For images upscaled before the feature's release, the article offers a solution: by using the [Custom Zoom] option to reset the zoom level to 1, users can effectively "refresh" the image, enabling the [Vary (Region)] button to appear and allowing for inpainting on these previously upscaled images. The article also details how to use the inpainting feature multiple times to add or modify elements in an image, such as adding knives to a scene, and emphasizes the importance of community support through claps and comments to encourage the creation of similar content.

Opinions

  • The author believes that the "Vary (Region)" feature has significant potential for image editing within Midjourney.
  • The article suggests that the ability to inpaint previously upscaled images is a valuable enhancement to the user experience.
  • The author encourages reader interaction, such as clapping or commenting, to signal to Medium's algorithm that the content is valuable and to motivate the creation of future tutorials and guides.
  • The author demonstrates a proactive approach to problem-solving by providing a detailed method to access inpainting features on images that were upscaled before the introduction of "Vary (Region)."
  • There is an implicit opinion that the Midjourney community will benefit from these mini-tutorials, which are designed to be simple and easy to follow for new users.

Huhuhuu... no hiding…. We're coming for you, old upscaled photos. It's time to cut out the unwanted things from the images with Vary (Region). /imagine prompt: girls walk with young man behind them next to them, in the style of humorous distortions, nerdcore, unilalianism --ar 3:2 then inpainting several times to add knives into the image.

Midjourney inpainting has arrived. It’s called “Vary (Region),” and it debuted on August 22nd, 2023.

If you’re still getting familiar with Vary (Region), read this introductory story to learn more about this inpainting feature.

The Vary (Region) button will appear after upscaling an image. So what if you’ve already upscaled your favorite photos prior to 22nd August? Can you still touch them up with the inpainting?

Problem statement

It’s only possible to upscale the image once. As a result, the Vary (Region) button is unavailable for the previously upscaled images.

The image grid below was generated a long time ago. Image 3 was selected and upscaled.

Image 3 can no longer be upscaled. When you click U3, a warning dialog box appears, reminding you that the image has already been upscaled.

There’s no issue with the other images in the Image grid. When you upscale Images 1, 2, and 4, the [Vary (Region)] button will appear.

The Midjourney bot will remind you that you cannot upscale the same image more than once.
The bot's "gentle reminder"

Solution

  1. Search and return to the previously upscaled image.
  2. Click the [Custom Zoom] button. A dialog box will appear.
  3. Replace --zoom 2 with --zoom 1. Then click the Submit button.
  4. A new image grid will appear with identical images.
  5. Choose any of them to upscale; they are all the same.
  6. The [Vary (Region)] button will now appear.

Have fun inpainting!

Click the [Custom Zoom] button. A dialog box will appear.
Replace --zoom 2 with --zoom 1. Then click the Submit button.
A new image grid will appear with identical images.
The [Vary (Region)] button will now appear.

Explanation

  • Using [Custom Zoom] to set the zoom level to 1 does not affect the image. However, it can “refresh” the image, causing the [Vary (Region)] button to appear.
  • You can also get to inpainting by using [Zoom Out 2x] and [Zoom Out 1.5x], but this will make your subjects smaller, and the bot may add new (unwanted) things to your image.
  • [Make Square] also allows you to get to inpainting, but it will return your image’s aspect ratio to the default 1:1.
(Top/Left) [Zoom Out 1.5x]. (Bottom/Right) [Zoom Out 2x]. You can also get to inpainting by using [Zoom Out 2x] and [Zoom Out 1.5x], making your subjects smaller. The bot may also add new (unwanted) things to your image.

Bonus: How I made the featured image

  1. Inpainting of a man’s right hand. Making him carry a knife.
  2. Inpainting again on the image where the man is carrying a knife. This time, the girl has a knife in her hand. (Hey… no one says you can’t do the inpainting on the same image several times in a row.)
  3. Reroll a few times until I’m satisfied with the results. (Rerolling will only affect the most recent inpainting area(s))

Conclusion

  1. You can use inpainting to modify your generated images even though they were upscaled long ago.
  2. To access the [Vary (Region)] button, use [Custom Zoom] to “refresh” the upscaled image.
