Midjourney Vary (Region): the first look at the new Inpainting feature

An innovative feature with great potential

You can edit the image’s details with Midjourney Vary (Region). For example, the earrings in this photo were added after the guy’s image was generated.

Midjourney just released a new exciting inpainting feature called the Vary (Region) today.

After you have upscaled an image, it will appear alongside the Vary (Strong) and Vary (Subtle) buttons.

It is recommended that you use the /remix mode to edit the prompt and make changes for the best inpainting results. To activate the /remix mode, type /remix. To deactivate, re-type /remix.

Key points about Vary (Region)

  • After clicking the Vary (Region) button, an editor will appear. This allows you to choose which areas of the image to do the inpainting.
  • You can select one or more regions using the Rectangle and/or Lasso tools.
  • To fine-tune your selection, use both the Rectangle and Lasso tools.
  • It’s easier to select a large area with the Rectangle tool first. Then, refine the edge with the Lasso tool.
  • The editor has no “subtract” function.
  • On the top left of the editor, there is an Undo button. To deselect the selected area, click Undo.
  • After selecting the region where you want to change/do the inpainting, edit the prompt (e.g., add “wearing glasses,” or “wearing earrings”) in the text entry area.
  • Press ENTER to submit your change. (You can also click on the small and round arrow button at the bottom right of the editor.)
  • If you’re not happy with your inpainting results, reroll to see what else is available. Rerolls after inpainting will only affect the selected/edited region.
  • This feature works best on large areas of the image (20% to 50%).
  • This is merely an estimate; a smaller region than 20% may still work (see the featured image — only earrings were added).
  • The new feature only solves some of the inpainting issues. It is sometimes preferable to do a Vary (Subtle) instead.
  • Changing the prompt will work best if the change is more aligned with the image (adding a hat on top of a character) rather than something entirely out of place (a dolphin in a forest).
  • While you can use the new feature as a general-purpose inpainting system, it can sometimes be frustrating because the system may fight your intent.
  • Jobs created with Very (Region) + Remix Mode will take into account the following parameters: --fast --relax --iw --no --chaos --stylize --style --weird --version --video
  • Vary (Region) accepts image references, weights, and multiprompting (::)

The new inpainting feature has a lot of promise. Do you want to learn about its creative use cases? Stay tuned and Follow me!

Let’s try it out, shall we?

/imagine prompt: a portrait photo of a guy --ar 3:2

This prompt generates an image of a guy for our testing. Nothing fancy. The Vary (Region) button appears after upscaling.

An image editor will appear after clicking the Vary (Region) button. The Undo button is at the top left corner.
Select the area(s) you want to inpaint using Rectangle or Lasso tool. Or a combination of both.

If you change a large area, such as your subject’s entire face, you will get another face instead!

The rectangle tool was used to select a large area.
Unless you want to drastically alter your image, choose a smaller area instead.
The smaller area was selected using the rectangle tool. This is to make the subject wear sunglasses.
The results of the inpainting. The subject is now wearing sunglasses.

Inpainting smaller areas is possible. But not too small.

This will not work if you select tiny regions.
You'll be asked to select a bigger area.
It is not necessary to make your selection pixel-perfect; a rough selection will still work. Add the phrase “wearning earrings” to add the earrings into the image.
Results of the inpainting. Subtle change of the subject is doable with Vary (Region). The subject now wears earrings. Image 3 has tiny earrings that worked quite well.
