Summary

The article titled "Men Clueless About Pregnancy?" humorously discusses the author's observation that only women reacted to a Facebook joke about pregnancy tests in a retirement community, suggesting men's lack of knowledge about pregnancy or their inability to grasp satire.

Abstract

The article, set in The Villages retirement community, recounts the author's Facebook post about the unexpected availability of pregnancy tests at a Dollar store, considering the community's age demographic and the rumored high number of widows. The post garnered responses exclusively from women, leading the author to speculate on the reasons for the male silence: ignorance of biological realities, obliviousness to humor, or sexist attitudes. This silence is juxtaposed with men's desire to influence abortion policies, implying a broader commentary on gender dynamics and societal expectations.

Opinions

  • The author implies that men may lack basic knowledge about female biology, specifically the improbability of pregnancy in older women.
  • There is a suggestion that men may be incapable of recognizing satire, as evidenced by their lack of engagement with the humorous post.
  • The author hints at a possible sexist disposition among men, as they did not participate in the conversation about pregnancy, yet often assert control over women's reproductive rights.
  • The article criticizes men who remain silent on matters of women's health but vocal about abortion control, labeling them as "pathetic."

Men Clueless About Pregnancy?

Only women reacted to the joke

Scenario

The Villages retirement community has a 55 minimum age requirement to move there. Then there’s the rumor that it contains over 50,000 widows. So, I was surprised at the Dollar store by one item and posted my reaction on Facebook as a joke.

Not many grannies and great grannies would need to test for pregnancy. I haven’t seen any pregnant grannies running around on the squares.

Responses

Every comment and thumbs-up response were from women! Not one man responded. I have a lot of men friends. I wondered if the men:

  • Did not know that women in their 60s and 80s cannot get pregnant
  • Were too dull to realize it was a joke
  • Are too sexist to respond

Those men are pretty pathetic if any of these reasons are true. And they want to control abortion!
