The content humorously critiques TV advertisements for erectile dysfunction products, particularly the "Roman" brand, while questioning cultural stereotypes about male virility.

Abstract

The article humorously critiques the recent TV advertisements for the erectile dysfunction product "Roman," drawing attention to the often amusing portrayal of intimacy and effectiveness in ads for such personal health products. It references the stereotypical imagery used in ads for Viagra and Cialis, such as couples in bathtubs and the overemphasis on the male smile, suggesting an imminent sexual encounter. The author expresses confusion over the tagline "Be Roman Ready," questioning if it implies a stereotype about Italian men's sexual prowess and seeking clarification from Italian men, referred to as "Goombahs."

Opinions

  • The author finds the advertising tactics for intimate health products like "Roman" to be unintentionally humorous, especially the unrealistic scenarios presented.
  • There is a perceived absurdity in the way these advertisements suggest the product's effectiveness, such as the over-the-top grinning and the suggestion of impending sexual activity.
  • The author seems to ridicule the notion that a product could be associated with a nationality's supposed sexual prowess, specifically questioning the implication that Italian men are more potent.
  • The piece concludes with a playful call for input from Italian men, inviting them to weigh in on the stereotype promoted by the "Roman Ready" slogan.

Men, are you “Roman Ready?”

You gotta love the TV ads for such intimate products as those treating both women’s and men’s problems “down there.”

The latest in the Viagra and Cialis camp is “Roman.” Unintentionally hilarious are the ads for Cialis. Do you remember the couple in side-by-side bathtubs? Or the one where a dude is grinning like an idiot with a female voiceover gushing, “Just look at that smile!”

Who really believes she was looking at his smile?!

I saw the Roman spot for the first time, today. And again, a guy and his gal are all smiles, the inference being that they’re headed for an epic roll in the hay.

(“We’re finally gonna fuck! Yaaaaay!”)

Then the guy looks at us schmucks viewing this thing and says, “Be Roman Ready.”

So. Do Italian guys sport more wood? I’m confused.

Goombahs, help me out here.
