THE SCRIBER’S NOOK NEWSLETTER — 0.6

Hello, writers and subscribers to The Scriber’s Nook! How is everyone doing over these summer months? Here in the UK it’s been a mixture of heady sunshine and monsoon-like rain — yes, in the UK!

Throughout the sunshine and downpours, I’ve been putting the final touches for two second editions of my stories (originally published in 2015 and 2016) and played host to my lovely cousin, Kathy, from Washington State. We hadn’t seen each other since we were 15 so had a lot of catching up to do! She was shown all the sights and sounds of Liverpool (including visits to the Albert Dock, St George’s Hall, the Tate Gallery, the Three Graces, the two cathedrals, the music quarter, and of course, the Cavern Club. She returned to the States a few days back and here we are, almost at the end of the month.

So, kicking myself (several times!) into action, here is our latest newsletter …

The Scriber’s Nook, alongside sister publication, MuserScribe, is proud to introduce our latest writers and stories. If you missed our previous newsletter, you can catch it here …

All writers (aspiring or established) are welcome to join our Nook and showcase their creativity via short fiction, poetry, book chapters, memoirs, or just plain flights of fancy.

Genre writer? Sci-fi, romance, speculative, crime, historical? We love genre!

The Scriber’s Nook has become a haven of varied, interesting, and eclectic offerings. Here are just some of them.

★ Featured Writers

Josh E describes himself as a ‘fiction writer, bookworm, and Tolkien fanatic!’

‘The Cycle’ is a beautifully realised meditation on ‘life reborn’ …

Our Favourite Quote from ‘The Cycle’

I escape the confines nature bestowed as a caring mother as a mentor who wished me beauty freedom to roam the very lands I looked upon as a young naïve beast — though beast is a harsh term — with body transformed inspiring truth and delight

C. Elyse writes prose poetry, short stories, and novellas. She’s also an editor on Medium for Real (a publication for real-life stories).

A birthday, a long day at the office, a haunting, and a one-year time jump make up the beautifully descriptive and subtly supernatural tale of ‘Good Omens — Everywhere a Sign’.

Our Favourite Quote from ‘Good Omens — Everywhere a Sign’ …

I have it great, much better than most, but I am unhappy. My heart isn’t broken, it is lonely; my friends are few and far between; and pride appears to be the best frenemy. I have the bluest of the successful career woman blues. Bluer than indigo, my blues are damn near black.

James Dundon is an English teacher who loves writing vivid, direct, and scriptural stories designed to appeal to a reader’s humanity and imagination …

In ‘Discovering My Voice’ he speaks eloquently of dyslexia and the pre-judged prejudices he experienced at school.

Our Favourite Quote from ‘Discovering My Voice’ …

To them, I was the naughty dog, the boy with limitations, the untouchable boy. The boy whose stupidity was just too much to deal with. The boy who was both obnoxious and insecure; a boy too closed-minded. A boy who was only a C student; no matter what he did, just keep giving him a C.

Erohtar Isnam is a poet with a specialist interest in fantasy, horror, and ‘occasional’ political blogs.

‘My School Teacher’ recalls memories of a much-missed mentor.

Our Favourite Quote from ‘My School Teacher’ …

That was how I knew it was a dream, she was ecstatic and full of life, not gloom as I remembered her when alive. She wasn’t a pile of ash but a wonder only a dream could construct.

In ‘Good Old Days’ Sujit Chakraborty mourns the loss of childhood innocence at all too young an age.

Our Favourite Quote from ‘Good Old Days’ …

But I remember how eager we were to reach adulthood by whatever way possible or as if happened in our dreams.

Ralph Serpe is a writer, artist, and musician.

‘Gail’s Gift’ introduces us to chess-playing seniors, Joe, and Harry. Joe, 82, worries over his mortality and feels he’s missed out on something …

Our Favourite Quote from ‘Gail’s Gift’ …

“Sheesh, Joe, you ok? I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“Gail bought me that hat, Harry. Before she passed. Whenever I’d misplace it, she’d give me hell. Brings back memories, is all.”

Harry’s smile faded, now genuinely concerned for his old friend.

“She was always looking out for you, wasn’t she?”

There is much, much more that we look forward to including in our next edition.
