Medium’s Top 8 Publications for Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI In 2024

A ranking of relevant publications based on combined Medium and social media followers

If you’re a new writer just starting out on Medium, you probably don’t have many followers yet. To reach a broader audience and start building your follower count, you should publish your article in a relevant publication. But which publication should you choose?

Medium publications are shared spaces for stories written around a common theme or topic, usually by multiple authors

In this article, I will list my current top 8 Medium publications in Data Science (DS), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for 2024 that are currently looking for authors.

To rank the publications, I collected data on their Medium followers as well as their social media followers. Social media accounts include LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and X (Twitter). Social media accounts are only included if they are actively promoting new articles.

Compared to my 2023 list last year, I have updated the data, added/removed publications from my list, and reduced the weight of social media followers in the overall ranking.

Over the past year, I’ve learned that there’s no guarantee that publications will promote your story on their social media channels, so I’m giving internal Medium followers more weight than social media followers.

Publications that I had to remove from the list because they no longer accept new writers to publish on Medium

  • […] in Plain English moved to their own blogging platform
  • Better Programming was put on hiatus
  • Geek Culture has not published any new stories for months now. It appears to be inactive.

Ranking Based on Medium Followers

Figure 1 shows the ranking based on the current number of Medium followers for each publication listed.

Ranking Based on Social Media Followers

Figure 2 shows the ranking based on the sum of the number of social media followers, including LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and X/Twitter.

Social media followers are only counted if they actively promote new articles.

Only Towards Data Science and Towards AI have several active social media accounts. All other publications either have no social media or are currently inactive.

Overall Ranking

Finally, Figure 3 shows the overall ranking when Medium and social media followers are combined. Since there is no guarantee that publications will promote your article on social media, I gave the combined social media followers a weight of 0.25 and Medium followers a weight of 1.

While Towards Data Science still dominates the top spot, compared to Figure 1, Towards AI moves into second place due to its active social media presence.

Conclusion

I hope these three charts have given you some insight into the largest publications for DS, ML, DL, and AI. All of the Medium publications listed are accepting new submissions.

Towards Data Science is by far the Medium publication with the most followers. To reach the widest audience with your articles, try to post high-quality content here.

Towards AI comes in second for its social media presence. Try this publication for AI-related content.

Third place goes to Level Up Coding, which is a great place for coding tutorials and advice for programmers.
