Summary

Casey Botticello discusses the potential of Medium as a platform for writers to monetize their work, emphasizing its ease of use and the importance of writing quality content for financial success.

Abstract

Casey Botticello was interviewed by Shelby Church on her YouTube channel, where they discussed the viability of making money on Medium. Botticello, along with Zulie Rane, another prominent Medium writer, shared insights on how Medium compensates writers based on member reading time rather than views, which can be counterintuitive for those used to other platforms. The interview highlighted that while writing for Medium is not a get-rich-quick scheme, it offers a straightforward publishing process with a professional appearance, making it an attractive option for writers who are passionate about their craft. Botticello also pointed out that while significant earnings are possible, they typically come after years of dedicated effort.

Opinions

  • The interview is considered fair and effectively showcases Medium as a platform for monetizing writing.
  • Medium's payment model based on member reading time is emphasized as a unique aspect that differentiates it from platforms that pay based on views.
  • Writing for Medium is seen as advantageous compared to other online money-making ventures, such as YouTube, due to the reduced time investment in content production.
  • Medium is ideal for writers who are dedicated to their craft and are looking for a platform to share their work professionally.
  • It is not recommended for those seeking quick financial gains or who do not enjoy writing.
  • The potential to earn a significant amount from a few articles is acknowledged, but it is noted as an exception rather than the norm, often resulting from years of consistent effort.

I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by Shelby Church on her YouTube Channel about making money on Medium (alongside Medium writer extraordinaire Zulie Rane).

Overall, I thought the video was quite fair and Shelby did a great job highlighting how Medium is a great platform for writers looking to monetize their work.

She also has a number interesting videos on her channel covering different ways to make money online, which are worth a watch.

A couple of key points:

  • Medium pays writers based on Member Reading Time. I get questions all the time asking something along the lines of “my article received x views but only made $x, whereas a previous article…” Unlike many platforms, views are not necessarily an indicator of article earnings.
  • Medium writing is advantageous when compared to many other creative platforms for making money online. For example, as Shelby points out, YouTube video production can take a massive amount of time. While writing is not easy, Medium does make the actual process of publishing content, with a professional appearance, very straightforward.
  • Medium is ideal for people who love to write, but would not have taken the steps to publish a book or submit long-form content to professional media/news publications. Medium is not a good choice for people that hate writing, but are looking to make a quick buck, or for people who expect to make any money quickly. You can make a lot of money on a few Medium articles but this is the exception, not the rule. Additionally, almost all those writers making a lot of money on a few articles have typically spent years working toward that goal.

I hope you guys found this interview interesting. I’m always happy to give Medium a shout out since I probably never would have published content online if it hadn’t been for Medium.

Until next time!

Casey
