Medium vs Facebook: how Medium changed my social media experience
I prefer claps instead of likes

Nearly two months ago, I discovered Medium Platform.
First, it was a vast source of great articles which I introduced into my daily routine.
Second, I found it could be a good income source. So, I applied for the Medium Partner Program.
Third, and this comes after almost two months of using Medium, I find it as a different social media platform.
Yes, you read it right, social media platform.
The difference is that it doesn’t leave me feeling drained or disillusioned.
I don’t waste a lot of time on social media. I only have Facebook, and I spend around 15 minutes daily. I programmed my phone to block access to this app when it reaches 15 minutes of usage.
Even though I am not the kind of person with posts, many comments, and reaction actions (imagine my last 2 or 3 pictures were posted in July — August), I am caught by reels and videos if I don’t have a limit. Haha!
What I love about Medium is that besides being a content-sharing site, it can be a nice personal virtual hangout when it comes to socializing.
Instead of endlessly swiping through an avalanche of reels and insignificant posts, here I am, scrolling through thought-provoking articles that captivate my mind, give me some ideas I can implement in my life on different aspects, or teach me something new.
In the beginning, I was very impressed by the “clap” feature. On medium is my digital applause. And the cool thing is that you can do it up to 50 times. And that's great. You can show your appreciation in a more numerous way.
Haha, Mr. Facebook!
Now, what truly sets Medium apart is its community aspect. It’s a space where I’ve had the pleasure of meeting fascinating people, even geniuses when it comes to content strategy and growth speed, motivated and motivational writers, great content creators, and full-knowledge influencers.
Engaging in conversations with them via in-article responses expands my know-how dimensions.
Some of these would not have been possible without becoming a creator too.
So, I don’t only consume content, but I also share my thoughts and experiences.
And it’s crazy how some of my stories/articles have been met with unexpected appreciation and, thankfully, attitude.
Trust me when I say it, but the dopamine you get when you see people supporting your articles is more significant compared to Facebook or other social media platforms.
The craziest fact?
When I wake up, first I verify my Medium notifications.
The difference between the time on other social media platforms and Medium lies in the quality of the experience.
Instead of mindless scrolling through reels and random posts, I find myself caught in meaningful content, fortifying connections that go beyond superficial likes.
As a conclusion, Medium has redefined my social media experience. It’s not just a platform for articles; it’s more than that because of the way how ideas flow, connections are created, creativity arises, and dopamine comes from the joy of engaging with content that truly matters.
And I can hear claps, but I can’t hear likes.
