Medium Updates Partner Program: 5 Changes That Impact Writers
Good and Bad News!
Medium has just rolled out new updates to its Partner Program. This impacts all existing and new writers of the partner program.
Let me share below 5 major changes that will impact writers.
Change 01: The Good — Revenue Through Referred Membership
Good news! Medium added another way of earning revenue. To quote Medium —
For every reader who a Partner Program writer converts to a paying Medium member, the writer will receive half of that reader’s membership fee, net of standard payment processor fees.
The referral fees will be recurring for as long as the membership would be active.
There will be two ways members can earn revenue through membership
- Every partner program writer will have a personal referral page. Readers can become members by clicking that page.
To get to your page, go to settings and then click Audience Development. You will then be able to promote membership through your customized link.
Whenever you will promote this page on social media or any other area, please mention that you will be earning a portion of their membership fees.
Here’s mine:
The page looks like this:

2. Any non-paying reader can subscribe to your email subscription list. Once they do, Medium will automatically ask them if they’d like to be a paying member. If they convert, Medium will attribute that conversion to you. You will then earn a referral commission.
So, this is the good news. In a way, this is Medium’s affiliate program.
It might be difficult to get new paid readers. But if you can, both you and Medium win.
How much can you make?
Medium will share 50% of the amount after payment fees. How to calculate that?
- After every payment, there’s a flat $0.30 processing fee
- There are also 2.9% processing fee
- Medium will deduct that and split the rest with the referrer
For example, if someone pays $5, Medium will deduct $0.30 flat fee and $0.15 (2.9%). The remaining amount would be $4.55. The referrer will get $2.27 every month for as long as the membership is active. If the user pays annually, then referred payment is $2.01 per month.
So, if you bring in 100 new paid members, you will earn between $201–$227 per month.
Change 2: The Bad — Increase Followers or Risk Removal from Partner Program
To become a partner, you will need to have a minimum of 100 followers. If you are already a member of the Partner Program, you will be given till the end of the year to increase your follower count to 100. The medium may remove you from the program if you do not do so.
Change 3: Minimum Payout Threshold — to be introduced
You need to earn a minimum of $10 to get paid. If you don’t, Medium will wait till you earn up to $10 and then make the payment. However, this is yet to be introduced. Medium will share more details on this later.
Change 4: Stay active or risk removal
If you don’t post regularly, you will be at risk.
I am guessing Medium has a lot of partner profiles with little interaction. They want to make them more regular. Medium also wants to get rid of inactive profiles.
If you haven’t published anything in 6 months, Medium may remove you from the program.
Change 5: A hurdle for new writers wishing to join Partners Program
If you are not part of the Partner Program yet, then this one is bad news for you.
- You will need 100 followers at least
- You will need to have published at least 01 article
- You have to be from one of the geographical enrolment eligible locations
While this makes things a bit difficult for new writers, this is kind of expected.
If you look at other similar platforms like YouTube, they have an even stricter hurdle. In YouTube, you need to have 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time to apply for monetization. The medium may eventually make this more difficult for new writers.
We have seen a lot of changes in Medium in the last few months. There was the bonus program, fixed payments, the Medium Writers Challenge and now referred membership. I am sure they will keep on adding more elements to this platform.
