Summary

Medium has initiated a Writers Challenge with four prompts—Work, Death, Reentry, and Space—offering substantial cash prizes and a deadline of August 24, 2021, for submissions that meet specific criteria and tagging requirements.

Abstract

Medium's Writers Challenge invites writers to explore four distinct themes: Work, Death, Reentry, and Space. Participants are encouraged to submit articles that reflect creativity, originality, and high writing quality. The challenge offers a total prize pool of 100,000, with a grand prize of 50,000, four finalist prizes of 10,000 each, and 100 honorable mentions receiving 100 each. Writers must use specific tags for each topic to qualify and can submit one article per topic. The articles must be at least 500 words long, and there is no upper word limit. Writers are advised to prepare their submissions thoughtfully and can choose to publish their entries immediately or wait until closer to the deadline. The challenge allows for self-publishing and publishing in non-Medium publications, and writers can view other submissions by searching for the relevant MWC tags on Medium.

Opinions

  • The challenge emphasizes the importance of creativity, originality, and writing quality in the submissions.
  • The author suggests that writers should start preparing their submissions early and not procrastinate.
  • The article implies that reading other submitted articles can be beneficial, though it cautions that the popularity of an article does not guarantee it will win.
  • The author encourages writers to take advantage of the opportunity to express their experiences and perspectives on the four diverse topics.
  • The inclusion of a screenshot and a link to another article suggests a supportive community and provides resources for further engagement with the challenge and writing on Medium in general.

  • To participate, add the MWC Reentry tag after writing the article

Death

  • Death can be about people, relationships, jobs, ideals, and anything else that ceased to exist in your life. Bad habits or negative aspects of life can also wither away.

  • Work can be an important part of our identity. It can be something that fulfills us. Or it can enable us to pursue other passions or earning sources. Work can also be draining.

Using Tags properly

  • Remember to add the mentioned tag properly
  • Note that only one submission per creator per tag will be accepted. So, please do not use the same tag in multiple articles.
  • You can use 4 other tags in the tag section which are not related to this competition.

Can you self-publish?

  • Yes, you can self-publish and publish in any non-Medium publications as per Medium help.

Is there a maximum length?

  • There is a minimum length of 500 words for a story.
  • No maximum length

When should you write?

  • Should you wait till the last week to see & learn from other submissions? Or do you want to share early so that judges have more time with your article? It is ultimately your call
  • My suggestion is to take time to prepare and then write. Do not procrastinate and create drafts as you go.

How can you read other submitted articles?

  • Go to search option on top of Medium page
  • Search the name of the tag like “MWC Work”
  • Click on Tags and select MWC Work Tag
  • You will see the page with all submissions. You can click on trending, latest or best to see which article is doing well. However, this is not an indication of which one will eventually win.
