List on Medium — Introduction

Here I am, your Newbie Medium Writer since 10th January 2023, making assumptions about Medium functionality based on other social media platforms I use.

This post is for fellow newbies or anyone else who is interested.

Is it a BookMark, a Favourite List or a Library?

Do you bookmark articles you want to read again or create lists of your own articles to make it easier for others to read your work? Or do you do both? or More? Or Do you even know the difference? Is there a difference? I hear you say ….. Well!

What am I talking about — see the screenshot below, where the big black rectangle is, where it says Library. That is what this post is about.

Quick Back Story

After reading a couple of articles by our fellow Medium writers, I found myself again, at another Oh, oh, oh, OH….. moment.

What is the Lowdown On Lists

As per Medium Help on the topic, this is what they say.

Lists are an easy way to quickly organize and share stories, from personal favorites, to recommended reads within a topic or area of expertise, to themed lists around stories that inspire you. — Medium Help Read here

The Basics

  • Give Your List a Name
  • You can give your list a description — this is optional
  • You can make it Private or Public
  • The public list can be shared with anyone and will be visible on your profile.
  • Others can Clap or leave Responses on your list.
  • I think you can have as many lists as you want; I can’t see there is a limit.

What Am I Currently Doing With My Lists?

My lists are for me to re-read something, the submission rules to a publication, or something I want to take action on. Most of my lists are private because they only add value to me. But they are a mess, and I need to tidy them up.

Next Actions for Potential You and Me

1) If you have lists that only you want to see — make them private 2) Decide on your Public list names. 3) Put your articles into your Public list 4) Write a post sharing your Public list with the Medium community

Timeline — I guess the sooner, the better.

What Other Medium Writers Are Doing and What They Say.

Alexander Semenyuk of Gain Inspiration Publication shared his List today — Read here.

Susie Kearley wroter “If you write on a range of topics, it’s really helpful to collate your stories into subject lists. Readers can then click on your list to see all your stories on a subject. Create lists by clicking on the sideways flag symbol at the top and bottom of your stories — it also shows on the preview pane.” — Susie Kearley read full article here

Last week I shared about Claps, that we can clap more than once. As well as clapping on stories people write, you can Clap on their list; it all helps with Ranking. Remember to share the love, share your appreciation for every article your read, and clap more than once.
