Medium Publications

Medium Publication Logo

How to create and format a Medium publication’s logo

Source: Casey Botticello of Blogging Guide

Medium publications can be customized in many ways. One of the most important details that publication owners and editors should customize is the Medium publication logo.

The Medium publication logo is the image which appears at the top of all your publication’s stories.

For example, in my publication, Blogging Guide, you can see the following image at the top of all the articles contained in my publication:

My publication logo.
My publication logo when viewing any article in my publication.

The Medium publication logo is 72px tall and can have a maximum width of 600px. Medium suggests that you make this logo transparent. And this is indeed a good idea.

One way around creating an actual transparent file is to match the color of your navigation bar to the same color as your logo’s background.

For example, let’s say I had made the same publication logo, but with a red background:

I could customize the navigation background bar to match the image background.

To do this I would go to my publication settings and click on the homepage button:

Next, I would click on the color palette and select the color of my background. If for some reason you don’t know the exact color of your logo you can use this handy tool which identifies the colors (in hex format) of uploaded images:

Now that I know my color code (#FF0000), I can enter this value.

After clicking save, I can see that my background now appears to be transparent as the background of my logo is the same as my publication navigation bar:

If I hadn’t made the change to the navigation bar color, the logo would look ugly and poorly formatted:

Mismatched Medium publication logo (bad logo)

Notes About Medium Publication Logos

  • The Medium publication logo is 72px tall and can have a maximum width of 600px
  • Ideally, the image should be fully transparent, so that it displays well.
  • The publication logo is fairly prominent on the mobile app, however it renders centered at the top of a publication’s article.
