Medium Private Notes

How to write a private note on a Medium story

Source: Casey Botticello of Blogging Guide

Private notes are an often underutilized article feature. If you want to leave feedback on an article, in a private way, leaving a note is the best way to do so. If you want to leave public feedback or comments, simply write a response.

How to Leave Private Notes

On a draft or a published post, select the text you want to comment on. Click the lock icon from the pop-up toolbar. Write your note. If you do not see this option in the toolbar, it is because the author has turned off private notes.

Leaving a Private Note

Additional Notes About Medium Private Notes:

  • When you leave a note, it will be visible to you, the author of the post, and if the post is in a publication, the editors of the publication will also be able to see the note.
  • If you leave a note, the author will receive a notification, on Medium, letting them know that you left a note on their post.
  • If you reply to a private note, the user that left the private note will also receive an email notification.
  • If you don’t want readers to be able to leave private notes on your stories, you can turn them off in your Account Settings.
