Medium Just Handed Me An Extra $500!

It’s Raining Money on Medium Today!

Photo by Giorgio Trovato on Unsplash

Today something thrilling happened. Medium deposited $500 in my bank account. Out of the blue. For no apparent reason.

There was no explanation for this windfall. It arrived at the same time as my Medium monthly payment for April (which was for considerably less than $500.)

Of course, this kind of behavior does have some precedent. Medium once sent me a free T Shirt to express their appreciation, because I’d helped so many of my friends and family join and thrive on the platform:

So I figured the $500 windfall must be either (1) another gesture of appreciation or (b) a big mistake.

Or maybe Medium was actually reading my work! I’ve recently been writing about the fact that I’m getting paid a lot more on News Break than I ever did on Medium:

Perhaps the $500 was Medium’s way of saying, “News Break isn’t the only platform with a big pile of money to throw at writers. We’ve got a pile of money too — and here’s some to persuade you to stick around!”

If so? Consider me persuaded.

A few minutes after I received my $500 Windfall, an email arrived from Medium explaining it. Here’s what it said:

Medium members are discerning readers, drawn to great writing — like yours. To recognize the writers who made the most impact on members this past month, we’re rewarding 1,000 writers with a $500 bonus. Congrats, that’s you!

You made it here because the stories you published in April received the most member reads, claps, and follows. So, nice work! It’s writers like you that make Medium and the Partner Program a living network of insightful thinking. Keep the good ideas coming.

Actually, April wasn’t such a great month for me. But what the hell. I’ll take that extra cash, thanks!

After hearing from Medium, I also got email from other writers who’d just gotten some extra Medium Money in their bank accounts, like David Martin, who wrote:

I received a nice surprise this morning in the form of a $500 bonus from Medium. At first I was suspicious but I checked my Stripe account and the money is indeed there.

As a veteran Medium writer do you have any insight as to what is going on? Is this part of the Medium vs. Newsbreak battle? Is it likely to be a regular thing?

I was already having fun on Medium and making about a dollar a day but this gins up the fun to a whole new level.

I may be a Medium veteran and even a Medium Sherpa, but this development is new by me. I have no idea if Medium’s giving writers bonuses will be ongoing, or if it’s a one shot deal. I also have no idea if it has anything to do with News Break. (And what metric are they using to measure our success? Are claps finally making a comeback?)

There’s a plenty I don’t know. But, given this platform, the one thing I do know for sure? There’s gonna be a lot of writing about this!
