Abstract

ist

I just noticed that there is a lot of backlash against real journalist working here in North America (And of course around the world too). That is also a problem online too. A few months ago, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Or as we called it, the CBC), did an experiment where they stopped accepting Facebook comments on all their posts. They also did this on the CBC website. The reason why is that all their reporters who are women and minorities have been getting hateful comments to their stories. I am happy that they are doing, or have done, that. Besides, who wants to read racist, misogynistic, and homophobic comments? Not me.

NewsBreak

I want to be on NewsBreak, but they only pay people from the U.S. (I wish the Medium Writers from the States mention this). I am Canadian, and yes, I can write on that platform for free only for now.

But I have read some articles about Medium Members complaining about NewsBreak. I know that they have some strict guidelines in their Creator Content Policy for writers on there. I did look at their policy, and they do have something about misinformation on there. Likewise, I am not saying that the Medium Members on there are writing misleading news. I know that they have other problems with NewsBreak that I don’t want to get into here.

Of course, they do not want any false or misleading news on their Policy. It is called NewsBreak after all, and they have people there that make sure that what is being published is accurate. One part of their rules about misinformation also mentions health news. Medium Is Not Immune to Misinformation

We All Need to Step Up And Do Something About This.

I hate being the one who some people would consider a “Karen” (I am rolling my eyes at this one because I am not one who is spoiled and privileged. I am just a concerned citizen) when it comes to misinformation. But it is all over the internet. I wasn’t trained as a journalist, but more of a copywriter. But I have seen what real life reporters have to go through to get information that is correct and not misleading, before those get aired or published.

Yet, I am afraid that I will be one of those writers who will also accidentally spread false news too. I have done it on Facebook, where I shared someone else’s post and got a warning from the FB folks. I am only human who is also fooled into thinking that fake is real news too. But I don’t rely on social media being my only source of information.

I have read two misinformed pieces on this platform. One is of Covid, which I don’t want to get into too much detail. Some of you might know as to what that one is.

The other I recently read in the comments is about Brexit. The article was about something else. It was about someone’s experience being from another country. But a commentor wrote that Brexit started because people living in the U.K. don’t want Eastern Europeans coming into their country. I thought that this comment was racist (I am a Canadian with an Eastern European background). I wrote back to this person that the reason for Brexit has to do with economics, not racism. Likewise, I did do a little research before responding to this person. But this writer didn’t believe me, and I choose not to respond back.

Now that I mention it, I do want those of you who are reading this in the U.K. to respond to this article this question: What is the real reason behind Brexit?

Misinformation on the Web is a Real Problem that Should Be Stopped.

Now I know that most of you would write to me saying to ignore these fake articles. Besides, if I ignore this issue, it will get bigger and bigger. As there will be more and more of it coming. Otherwise, misinformation cannot be ignored. There are people who are not writers or journalists, who would believe ANYTHING that is written on the internet. That’s who my concern for misinformation is for. These are the same people who do not want to believe what the traditional news media, and pick their news sources to be only on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc. And I would also include Medium in this list.

This is what is happening online when it comes to Covid-19 and the pandemic. No wonder, you get people who are hesitant to get vaccinated.

I just saw on a trusted Canadian news program that Quebec is going to tax anyone who is not vaccinated. Otherwise, anyone who is not vaccinated is going to pay a high price for not doing so.

I want to be on NewsBreak, but they only pay people from the U.S. (I wish the Medium Writers from the States mention this). I am Canadian, and yes, I can write on that platform for free only for now.

Medium Should Also Step Up to Do Something About Misinformation.

I know that this is a platform where people can write anything they want. I, too, see countless articles about how to be a better writer, how to get 100 followers, and how to make $1,000 dollars on Medium if you do what the author did. Likewise, I stopped reading those altogether (authors who write these blogs always forget that there are Medium readers who aren’t interested in writing. Perhaps that is why there is a decline in readership). I also have written a few articles about writing. But nothing like the above. I’ve written one about how to write a TV/Radio/Video/Podcast commercial, for example.

I am getting off track here, but the owners of Medium should be aware that there is misinformation being written on here and that they should do something about it. It is not my intention that they should be strict as NewsBreak, but for something like CoronaVirus, to make sure that the author has done their research before posting that.

Come to think of it, I don’t know if any of the Medium Publications are doing anything to stop misinformation from happening. The one that I noticed about the fake Covid health article that I read, was from a publication where no one bothered to do a fact-check on it. If you work for a publication that does fact checks on news and health related topics, please let me know in the comment section. I would love to hear from you.

I know that editors in these publications do a good job in what kinds of articles are to be allowed in whomever they are working for. Likewise, I, too, have had a few of my article rejected (Not for misinformation, but for something else), and I am okay with that.

But I am not convinced that it is just up to the owners of Medium that should be on the lookout for misleading content. For those of you who are reading this article, if you find some misinformation on another articles on this platform, please report it to Medium or the specific Publication so that they can take that off the site.

Conclusion

What the lesson here is that if we writers are doing articles on something that is happening in the news, or it has to do with health and science, to make sure that you do your research. And to make sure that the source of your research is credible. I mean, if you got your information on Reddit, you might have to ask the person where they got that info. Or even check the credentials of the author who wrote that blog. What kind of doctor are they? Are they a foot doctor writing something about Covid, for example?

All in all, PLEASE stop the spread of misinformation. This affects all of us.
