Medium Introduces The Slap

A more complete array of response options

Do better! / Photo by Andrew Le on Unsplash

It has been announced that Medium has introduced a new feature:

The Slap.

A little red hand icon will now be placed right next to the clap option.

This will give readers a more complete option of responses to stories on Medium. You can give a piece up to 50 Slaps.

Similar to the Clap, there will be just enough ambiguity where the writer of the piece in question will not know exactly why you just slapped them 50 times, or 25 times, or 10 times, as the case may be.

This can be a gentle way for the reader to put the writer on alert: less of this please, and more of what you did in the last piece where I clapped instead of slapped.

The good news is that Slaps will still count as engagement and count towards your earnings. The CEO’s thinking is that Slaps are still a cut above utter indifference, where a reader will click on your piece and be so profoundly unmoved that they leave before the 30 second mark.

Also, you will have the opportunity to explain your Slaps to the writer in the Comments section. This should add spice and variety in the Comments section and give a fuller array of feedback for the struggling writer.

You can also Slap with no comment and leave the writer in the dark about your reasoning. This will give the writer a strange mixture of gratitude for the extra coffee money and offended pride for just having been mysteriously slapped by a complete stranger for something they wrote.

The Slapper also has a more subtle in-between alternative to commenting or not commenting: they can highlight a few lines. This will give the writer a clue as to which lines in particular inspired the reader to Slap them in the face 25 times.

When asked if this new Slap feature might lead to an online Civil War, the CEO responded confidently: Medium is a place where very mature adults are striving to become Better Humans. Nobody grows without a little constructive criticism. I see this new feature as an enlightened form of Tough Love.

Time will tell.

Thanking Grandma Smillew for this little pub about all things Medium. Unfortunately, we are still waiting for the Slap icon to be officially implemented, so please liberally use the Clap icon until further notice.

Here’s one I accidently hit ‘publish’ on yesterday that might deserve a Slap.

Here are two by Debdutta Pal and Srini that deserve a round of Claps.

Satire
Humor
Medium Clapping
Constructive Criticism
