Summary

Medium supports a wide range of embeds, including Tweets, Instagram videos, and more, which can be added to articles by pasting the URL into the Medium editor.

Abstract

Medium supports over 600 embed providers through Embed.ly, a dedicated embedding service. To embed content on Medium, users only need the URL of the content they want to embed. Some of the embeds that Medium writers commonly use include Upscribe, Play.ht, and Smedian. If users have Do Not Track (DNT) enabled in their browser, they will see a warning when loading a story with a video or other embed from a provider whose Do Not Track policy is different from Medium's. Medium does not allow users to insert and run scripts into the site for security and privacy reasons.

Opinions

  • Medium's use of Embed.ly allows for a wide range of embeds to be added to articles.
  • Medium's policy of not allowing users to insert and run scripts into the site is a security and privacy measure.
  • The use of embeds can enhance the user experience on Medium by providing additional context and multimedia content.
  • The use of Do Not Track (DNT) can impact the user experience on Medium by displaying warnings when loading stories with certain embeds.

To embed a Tweet, Instagram video, or more on Medium, all you need to do is to paste the URL into the Medium editor, and press Enter to convert that link into an embed.

Note: Embedding with the embed code is not supported. To embed content on Medium, all you need is the URL. For example, to embed a Tweet, paste the direct URL of the Tweet and press Enter.

Supported embed providers

Embeds on Medium are handled through Embed.ly, a dedicated embedding service.

Embedly currently offers over 600 supported embed providers, which have been directly integrated with the Embedly service. Content from those services can be embedded on Medium.

Some of the Embeds You May Have Noticed:

  • Upscribethe form many Medium writers put at the bottom of their articles to collect reader information and build email lists.
  • Play.ht — Used to create audio narrations of Medium articles.
  • Smedian — Used by writers to submit their articles to publications.

Notes About Medium Embeds

  • If you have Do Not Track (DNT) enabled in your browser, you will see an overlaid warning when you load a story with a video or other embed from a provider whose Do Not Track policy is different from Medium’s.
  • Clicking on Show embed will enable you to see the embedded content from the third party site.
  • Medium does not allow users to insert and run scripts into the site for security and privacy reasons. You can however embed example code blocks or snippets on your posts for discussion purposes.
