Get Better at Becoming Distributed — Introducing “Soda Pop”

An update with a popping surprise!

How time flies! It’s been a while since the previous version “Popcorn” of my Medium Distribution Info was released. Are you sated yet? Just one more exploded kernel? No? How about a drink then? You must be parched…

Check these release notes to quench your thirst. Make sure to scroll down all the way for a new surprise extension!

I would be thirsty in a barren landscape like that. Water photo created by ViDIstudiowww.freepik.com

Soda Pop — The Release You Are Thirsty For

If you have been reading my updates, you probably remember I keep telling you that I have learned a few new tricks?

And that housekeeping of the code is in order?

Well… Guess what?

That’s right: I did some housekeeping. I think I have probably rewritten about 30% of the extension. I have been bent over my keyboard for days analyzing my old gears and replacing them with shiny new parts. I don’t mind if you want a peek under the hood. Wear your sunglasses! The new code is hot!

I imagine you must be wondering what this new extension brings.

It’s called Soda Pop for a reason. I once again try to attempt to be clever with words. Don’t tell me if I failed.

The very bright among readers have noticed that both the previous release and the current release share ‘Pop’ in their names. That’s because I couldn’t bear the thought of disappointing you.

See, this new release doesn’t pack a lot of features. I kept half of the name because of this.

But… There’s a little surprise at the end of this story.

What’s New in Soda Pop?

The new code allows for a much smoother experience. Now the column at your stats overview will display its results as soon as the data is downloaded from the server. No more needless scrolling. You will hardly notice that you are running an extension.

That is rather cool, isn’t it? Did I mention you get free ice cubes with this release?

The most notable addition can be found on the analysis page. Take a look:

Watch out for analysis paralysis. This new table layout will have you entertained for ̶d̶a̶y̶s̶.at least a couple of seconds. Screenshot by me.

The above table is one of the updates to the analysis page. It’s a lot easier on the eye than the previous one. And you get to filter your table (see the little boxes just below the headers? Start typing there to filter).

There are more additions to the page. Check it out yourself. Note that I have only used natural flavours.

A couple of minor things, mostly aesthetical, have made it to this release. But other than that just about wraps it up.

Oh, and one more thing…

A little fizz in our drink is provided by a new button:

Screenshot of the popup page. Not the button on the right. It’s new. Screenshot by author.

Along with Soda Pop, I have also released Medium Earnings. It’s a great little extension that helps you keep track of the money you get to spend at the theatre. Read more about it here.

What’s next?

The new code architecture allows me to do crazy things with the data I am now able to wield at my command! Do let me know what you want to see next!

These things are likely to be included in the next release:

  • download as Excel
  • better filters
  • custom domain support (I feel like I should never build this, but to include it in the list anyway).

Beta releases

Before I release a new version, I first release it as a beta-version. Want to join the test team for more karma? Check out this story.

Acknowledgments

The first versions of this extension were only possible due to the hard work Tomas Trajan put into his statistics extension. I got familiar with JavaScript and coding extensions by looking at his code. Thanks, Tomas!

Guilherme Brito has taken a different approach to his statistics extension. The current codebase of Distribution Info is based on the foundations he has laid. Cheers, Guilherme!

Downloading, installing, and updating

Chances are you are reading this because the extension has just been updated to the new version. You’re good to go unless you also want to watch the double feature. Medium Earnings needs to be downloaded separately.

Surprise extension: get a grip on your earnings

Read more about my other extension here:

Speaking about earnings, I got numerous complaints (two actually) that you need a credit card to buy me a coffee. I’ve set up a Patreon page to battle this. It’s fine if you don’t, but it would be awesome if you donated something.

That’s all folks! Get out there and keep getting those stories distributed!
