How to add custom titles and subtitles to your Medium Stories

Many Medium writers do not realize that they can add a custom title and subtitle to their post if they want to have a different title for the preview, and a different one on the post page itself.

For example:

Let’s say you are editing the following article:

How to Create a Custom Title/Subtitle in Medium

Step 1.

Enter edit mode either by starting a new draft, or by visiting your story page, clicking the button in the top-right corner and choosing Edit story.

Step 2.

In edit mode, click the menu icon in the top-right corner of the page.

Step 3.

From the drop-menu, click Change display title / subtitle.

Step 4.

Enter your custom title and/or subtitle, which will appear in previews of your story on Medium, and on social media.

Notes on Creating a Custom Title and Subtitle

  • Customizing your article title or subtitle will change the appearance of your article on your publication homepage, in previews of your story on Medium, and in search engine results (although this last one will take a bit longer to update).
  • Even if you create a custom title or subtitle, this will not change the title or subtitle of your story when a reader clicks on and opens your story on its URL.
