Mastering These 5 Habits Skyrocketed My Writing Earnings
Achieving $100 monthly is possible even if you are a novice writer.
Hey there, readers and fellow scribblers.
Since late 2020, I’ve been churning out more articles than a popcorn machine — 850 and counting on this platform alone.
On LinkedIn, I took a pause at the moment, But publishing content there based on my recall, I’ve been dropping content like a rapper — about 280 posts a year since 2019.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows.
There were highs, there were lows, and there were days when I wondered if I’d ever make enough money to pay for that Japan vacation I took a long time ago.
The Hustle and the Hurdles
I started this wild ride with stars in my eyes and a keyboard under my fingers.
But recently, life got a tad hectic with my VP role with a digital bank. I thought, “Hey, maybe I’ll just post a few articles monthly.”
Big mistake.
My earnings took a nosedive faster than a skydiver without a parachute, plummeting to a measly $15.
Yep, you read that right.
Time for a Writing Makeover
I knew I had to shake things up, so I built a databank of my life’s adventures, from grade 9 trips abroad to today’s “aha” moments.
If an idea strikes, I jot it down faster than a squirrel on espresso.
Then, voila! It magically evolves into a story when I start typing — well, most of the time.
The Law of Cause and Effect
While I am also a career coach, I’m no stranger to asking the tough questions. So, I started applying this “interrogation technique” to my writing.
Instead of settling for surface-level fluff, I dug deeper, challenging my ideas and ensuring they resonated with readers.
It’s like being your detective, minus the fedora and trench coat — though, admittedly, those would be cool.
My Bookish Dreams Came True
I’ve always dreamt of publishing a book, but traditional routes felt like climbing Everest with flip-flops.
So, I took matters into my own hands and self-published.
Sure, it wasn’t a walk in the park; my Pastor critiqued my draft like a Gordon Ramsay of literature.
By the grace of God (and some serious editing), my book saw the light of day in 2017.
A Writer’s Best Friend
Believe it or not, my best ideas often come to me in the shower — no, not because of the singing (although I have a killer rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody”).
It’s the solitude that sparks creativity.
I brainstorm topics during a jog or a scrub because inspiration doesn’t clock in and out — it strikes anytime, anywhere.
Recycling Ideas
As Picasso once said, “Good artists copy; great artists steal.”
Before you sharpen your pitchforks, let me clarify — I’m not plagiarizing.
I’m reframing, expanding, and adding my twist to existing ideas, much like adding sprinkles to a cupcake. It’s all about making it uniquely yours!
The Write Way Forward
So, what’s the secret sauce to leveling up your writing (and income)?
It’s all about adapting — whether it’s building a databank of life’s highlights, applying the law of cause and effect, or self-publishing your dream book.
And remember, alone time is golden, and stealing — err, borrowing — ideas can be a lifesaver when you’re stuck in a creative rut.
Happy writing, folks!
