Summary

Marvel/Disney has initiated legal action against the A.I. writing tool Jarvis.ai, which has rebranded to Jasper.ai to avoid trademark infringement.

Abstract

Jasper.ai, formerly known as Jarvis.ai, an A.I. writing assistant, has been legally challenged by Marvel/Disney due to its name's similarity to the fictional A.I. character J.A.R.V.I.S. from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To circumvent a costly legal battle, Jasper.ai has chosen to rebrand. The software, which utilizes GPT-3 technology, is designed to assist copywriters and other creative professionals in generating high-quality content efficiently. Despite the legal hurdle, Jasper.ai has received positive reviews and is widely used by various companies, including tech giants. The rebranding is seen as a strategic move to avoid litigation and focus on product development and customer service.

Opinions

  • Dave Rogenmoser, CEO of Jasper.ai, initially considered contesting Marvel's legal threat but ultimately decided that rebranding was a more prudent business decision to avoid the financial and time-consuming aspects of litigation.
  • The rebranding is presented as a victory for both parties, allowing Disney/Marvel to protect their intellectual property and Jasper.ai to continue improving their product without the distraction of a legal dispute.
  • Jasper.ai's effectiveness is highlighted by its ability to produce content that can pass the Turing Test and its extensive collection of positive reviews from professionals.
  • The software's capabilities are touted as superior to even the best human writers, with its primary functions including the generation of blog posts, press releases, and various marketing materials.
  • The character J.A.R.V.I.S. from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, voiced by Paul Bettany, has a significant presence in the MCU, which may have influenced the decision to pursue legal action against Jarvis.ai.
  • The rebranding to Jasper.ai has not diminished the software's identity or functionality, as it continues to offer a wide range of templates and tools for content creation.
  • The use of A.I. in writing and content creation is defended as a tool that enhances human creativity rather than replacing it, with many authors and creatives embracing A.I. assistance.
  • The Jasper AI Whisperer offers training and consultancy services for those interested in leveraging AI for content creation and visual arts, indicating a market for AI-assisted creative processes.
  • The article suggests that AI-generated content is becoming more prevalent and accepted, with AI potentially playing a significant role in future content creation, including the possibility of AI writing novels.

Marvel/Disney Threaten Legal Action Against Copywriting A.I. Software Company Over The Avengers

Why did Jarvis change to Jasper?

The popular A.I. writing tool previously known as Jarvis.ai — used by copywriters around the world to speed up the production of persuasive content using the power of Artificial Intelligence — has been the subject of legal action by Marvel/Disney due to perceived similarities with the fictional A.I. character J.A.R.V.I.S.

To avoid confusion between the two properties, Jarvis has immediately rebranded as Jasper. This is a victory for both sides. Disney/Marvel can protect the IP of their superhero; while Jasper can avoid costly litigation to better spend their time and resources on more profitable endeavours. Co-Founder and CEO Dave Rogenmoser explained on Monday 25th January:

When we received the letter from Thanos — I mean Marvel — two thoughts came to my mind:

Oh crap, Disney is threatening us… But we have a legitimate argument to use the name in this category so maybe we could win.

Actually, this is Disney we’re up against. Even if we have a solid argument, they can keep us in court for as long as they want, draining our bank account and distracting us from progress. Is it really worth all of that just for a name?

So rather than spending all this time and money fighting Marvel to keep the name Jarvis, which would distract us from continuing to build an awesome product, we decided to change our company’s name from Jarvis to Jasper.

What is Jarvis anyway, er, I mean Jasper?

Jasper is an Artificial Intelligence assistant for copywriters, journalists, and other creative professionals to help write persuasive content. Utilising GPT-3, an evolutionary A.I. algorithm, Jasper is able to produce content that exceeds the capabilities of even the best human writers and copywriters with nothing more than a topic brief and set of keywords.

The results are genuinely surprising; Jasper rarely writes content that seems irrelevant, and can easily pass the Turing Test (which is the benchmark for a machine’s output to appear indistinguishable from that of a human).

Currently, Jasper has over three thousand 5-star reviews from professionals on G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot. Jasper is used by marketers, business owners, entrepreneurs and agencies. Chances are you’ve already read — and admired — content written by Jasper without even realizing it.

50,000 companies vouch for Jasper, including Google, IBM, HaperCollins, Keller Williams, LogiTech, Promo, AutoDesk, Airbnb, and Digital Marketer. That’s enough to assemble an Avengers team of their own. However, instead of raging against the Disney/Marvel machine, Jasper is set on changing and adapting for the better, promising stakeholders an “Epic 2022”.

Who is Marvel’s J.A.R.V.I.S.? Is he also The Vision?

J.A.R.V.I.S. is the name of Tony Stark’s (A.K.A Iron Man’s) voice-activated user interface. The artificial intelligence was downloaded into Stark’s suit, providing Iron Man with a HUD and real-time information. J.A.R.V.I.S. is voiced by Paul Bettany in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Originally a disembodied voice, J.A.R.V.I.S. was later given physical form as The Vision, also played by Bettany, in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. When J.A.R.V.I.S.’s A.I. mind merges with his physical body (thanks to the Mindstone), he regards himself longer as simply J.A.R.V.I.S. but identifies as The Vision.

The Vision was one-half of 2021’s hit show WandaVision on Disney+, the plot of which will be continued in the soon to be released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (United States release date May 6, 2022), as part of Phase Four of the MCU.

J.A.R.V.I.S. is one of the longest-running characters in the MCU (alongside Iron Man and Nick Fury), First appearing in the original Iron Man (2008). In the MCU, J.A.R.V.I.S. was affectionately named after Edwin Jarvis (the Stark butler, portrayed by James D’Arcy in Avenger’s Endgame and Agent Carter).

The initials J.A.R.V.I.S. stand for “Just A Rather Very Intelligent System” as revealed in Peter David’s novelization of Iron Man. Unlike many superheroes who have made the transition from comic book page to the cinema screen, the character was originally created for the MCU, only appearing later in Marvel comics in The Invincible Iron Man #11, in 2015. The MCU version of J.A.R.V.I.S. serves as an alternative origin story for The Vision (who was introduced in the comics back in 1967 as a creation of Ultron, not Tony Stark).

Like the software Jasper/Jarvis, the character has had multiple iterations and changes in identity — as audiences who have seen WandaVision will be aware.

What can Jasper — the software — do for writers?

Jasper is used for accelerating tasks such as blog posts, press releases, long-form articles, video scripts, emails, landing pages, and social media. It can create convertible copy in seconds, helping agencies to scale their content marketing efforts without requiring dedicated writers to produce copy.

However, Jasper does not spell the end of writing or content marketing, only its acceleration. In fact, Jasper helps free up time for creative strategists and marketers to focus on vibrant, compelling content that captivates customers.

By applying a scientific approach to messaging, tech-savvy copywriters can utilize the A.I. technology to discover untapped markets and craft messages which resonate with their audiences in a way they’ve never been able to do before. It is also integrated with Search Engine Optimization software. Jasper is designed to assist in the creation of marketing-related content. It will boost the effectiveness and productivity of copywriters to produce better content.

Also interesting is that Jasper has over fifty templates in place, including:

  • Marketing Frameworks (like PAS and AIDA)
  • Product Descriptions
  • Real Estate Listings (we’ve written about this function here)
  • Blog posts
  • Long-form articles
  • Facebook Ads
  • Google My Business
  • Review Responder
  • Perfect Headlines
  • Video Script Hooks and Introductions
  • Home Pages
  • Personalized Cold Emails
  • Company and Personal Bios

Jasper can also inspire authors, and people who struggle with writer’s block (we’ve written about this here — How to Cure Writer’s Block and Write 2022 Words Every Day this Year). Although critics may question the integrity or merit of a machine producing creative work, many writers would disagree.

When asked, one author who uses Jasper described the human/A.I. process:

“We can adapt to harness the tools. It’s still an art, a craft, to use an electronic muse or amanuensis.”

Human-A.I. collaborations have become a burgeoning New Media subgenre, pioneered by authors including Ross Goodwin (1 the Road, 2018). This has artistic development has led the University of California’s Laura Smith (deputy editor of the California magazine and the author of The Art of Vanishing) to ask: “Will A.I. write the next Great American Novel?
