Marilyn
A poem
Oh Marilyn Every time we watch you
Every time I think
How beautiful How sad
And I know that is unfair to you, to women to reality
It was more complex We are more complex
You were more complex Than just beautiful, just sad
But sigh, this film, that dress All body all light
And to think and know you read so much You read and wrote
Your mind was as hot as the rest of you But you knew you could not fight that fight
But oh if you did If you had tried
Or rather, if others had tried with you If feminism had tried then, if just being was enough
without having to be sex symbol without having to have sex symbol
need to be constantly culturally coded as dumb, shallow, fake, easy
If only all of this Instead of
letting all of the shallow get in Letting all of the troubles get in
letting the stereotypes and sexism get in and feed and feed
taking up all of the space in the mind, your mind, our minds
The life of the mind, yours, mine, saves it can save, and we know
Reading books, reading plays, reading communist theory Growth potential purification sigh- oh, — but yet -
Beautiful and sad Beautiful and sad
