Even with the best of intentions, we occasionally find ourselves looking for a fast food restaurant for lunch or dinner. Perhaps a lack of time or planning is to blame for forcing this upon us.

Maybe something happened out of our control that forced us to make this a last-minute meal choice. Whatever the reason, you’ll be ordering your next meal through your car window by speaking into a plastic clown.

The problem is that you already know that fast food is notorious for having a high-fat content and a high-calorie count while being low in nutrition. As luck would have it, there are some things that you can order from a few of the popular fast-food restaurants that are a little bit healthier.

The main thing is to avoid fattening side orders like fries and shakes and instead opt for broiled or grilled items.

Here are a few examples of better fast food options:

Choose the BK broiler chicken sandwich or the broiled chicken salad when you visit Burger King. The whopper is also not bad, but it must be ordered dry, without cheese, and with your own ketchup. The majority of the extra fat and calories on the whopper come from the sauces.

At KFC, stick to the tender roast chicken and skinless white meat. Fried chicken from anywhere should be avoided at all costs.

The grilled chicken deluxe and grilled chicken salad are the best options when you visit McDonald’s. Because almost everything else here is fried or deep-fried, these are your only viable options.

Subway has a few good options, such as the turkey breast sub and the sweet onion teriyaki chicken sub. Most of their low-fat menu items are good, but don’t add cheese or fattening condiments like mayo, and stick to the 6-inch ones.

The grilled chicken burrito and the grilled chicken soft taco are both excellent choices at Taco Bell. Any of their grilled chicken items are fine; just keep an eye out for any added fattening sauces or fried items that may be used in the item.

The grilled chicken sandwich and grilled chicken salad are both excellent choices when you visit Wendy’s. You can also get a baked potato on the side here, but be careful what you put in it.

As a general rule, avoid anything fried, such as French fries or onion rings, as these items can add up to 450 calories to your meal, which is usually the same as or more than what their signature burgers pack. Items such as milkshakes contain nearly as many calories as the signature burgers, so avoid ordering them as well.

Always order your food sans dressings, sauces, mayonnaise, or cheese. These simply add extra fat calories to your item. You can always request fat-free dressings and condiments such as ketchup and add them yourself when you order.

Final Thought

Even if you’re trying to eat healthier, not all fast food is off-limits. Make fast food an occasional treat, and be mindful of what you order when you do. When in doubt, opt for broiled or grilled chicken, and avoid most sides unless you know they are good choices, such as salads or baked potatoes.
