Making Stories Fun and Engaging

A graphical way to tell stories

I love writing and sharing my stories on Medium. And especially sharing them on the publication ILLUMINATION.

The challenge I face is how to make my stories fun and engaging. I believe it involves a willingness to get MESSY. I’m constantly working on my writing. And every once in awhile, I’ll produce a nugget of content that is a keeper.

One approach that I’ve enjoyed experimenting with is the use of graphics. I offer the following stories from my Medium laboratory, including a brief comment or two as a way of introduction. Thanks for reading!

All of the images for this story are screenshots of my Medium stories. Each graphic has a link to the story embedded in it.

The first three examples are stories built around graphics from whiteboard videos. Sometimes the art is created by typing. Typing? Yes! I like to tell folks. If you can type, you can draw. Even if it’s hunt-and-peck.

Medium allows you to embed the video too. It’s a cool combination of still images and animation.

Other times, I’ll add hand-drawn caricatures to my stories. This story covers the benefits of journaling.

The next three examples are stories built around memes. I’m finding this approach to storytelling very entertaining; at least for me 😃 With a few points and a meme to go with each, these stories write themselves.

I’m obviously a fan of Star Wars. The characters in these examples help me teach concepts about writing.

And also my use of templates for content creation.

The final example is a story built around a quote and art from a T-shirt design. In it, I tell a personal story about some very dear friends. This art was also on the coffee mugs I designed for our camp.

The great thing about this approach is it allows me to keep experimenting and look for new ways to tell my stories and engage with my audience.

Before I go, there’s a very cool way to graphically give things to my readers.

Upscribe is the tool I use to offer free resources to my readers, such as my ACRONYM Template. I like it for its ease of use, low-cost, and pleasing graphical interface. Get your copy below.

For those interested in trying Upscribe, this is my affiliate link. Thank you!
