“Making Money Writing on Medium is So Easy!”
I can’t believe I said these words. (And here’s how you can say them, too.)

My son has a business doing Amazon FBA. He’s the only one in my house who understands my excitement when something good happens with my solopreneur stuff.
“I’m at 1.6k followers on Medium!”
“Cool. Weren’t you just at 1k?”
“Yea, last month.”
But the words I uttered to him the other day shocked me.
They came out of my mouth, and I couldn’t believe it.
I was telling him about my progress with earnings, and I said, “Making money writing on Medium is so easy!”
I’ve heard people say making money was easy for them, and I believed them, but I didn’t get it.
I have always struggled to make an income online. I’ve been creating websites, doing affiliate marketing, and blogging for over 20 years!
I had a little bit of success, but it’s always been a struggle, and somehow, some way, Google always brought the hammer down on me and my website, leaving me feeling frustrated and wanting to give up (again).
Then I discovered Medium, and…
Nothing happened for 11 months.

Until…
I finally figured out a few key ingredients that Medium (and its readers) are looking for.
A niche?
I still don’t 100% know my niche, but I figured out what I like to write about.
I like to find the simplest ways to earn some extra income online (which is basically just a 2-part system). And I like to show people what I’m doing with step-by-step guides like here and here or what’s been working or not working for me. I truly enjoy sharing my experiences.
Once you know what you like to write about, everything will become so much easier. If you don’t know yet, keep writing and you’ll discover what it is.
Consistency.
I’m sure you’ve already heard this countless times. But I’m going to say it again because Medium’s algorithm loves consistency. So do your readers.
Quantity.
Do you know what else Medium’s algorithm loves? Articles. Lots of articles.
Forget the debate about quantity vs. quality. Put out a lot of articles with good quality. They don’t have to be perfect but make them good.
No one wants to read an article with walls of text, countless misspelled words, or a giant sales ad for some shady affiliate program. But you don’t need to wait until you’ve edited it 14 times either.
Just get your work out there.
Once I began writing almost daily in November 2023 that’s when I started to see growth.

Connection.
Connect with your fellow readers. Read stories that you’re genuinely interested in and then comment on them with genuine comments.
Make sure to make highlights and clap too because this helps other readers get paid.
Connecting with other people who write about your topic usually leads to friendships, camaraderie, and sharing of each other’s work. This is a win for everyone involved.
Replying.
If someone takes the time to comment on your article, reply back to them. Not only does it help you build trust with your readers, it’s also a nice thing to do. Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion that Medium sees all those extra comments and rewards you for it.
If your account gets really big and you have thousands of comments, it’s going to be hard to keep up. Do the best you can at that point.
But until then, make sure to reply back to everyone.
Linking.
Link to other relevant articles you’ve written. I’ve linked six of my other articles here.
If someone likes what you have to say, give them a chance to see what else you’ve got.
I came to Medium like many people do, not knowing how to use it in the right way and feeling frustrated that I couldn’t figure out how to grow.
In fact, here’s a DM I wrote to someone on Twitter/X in August 2023:

I had read some articles about how bad Medium was and how the authors were going to substack or other places.
I’m so happy I stuck around.
Because once you get into a rhythm here, you’ll be saying, “Making money writing on Medium is so easy!” And I can’t wait to read your article all about it.
