Macaroon, Macaron, Sweets, Cookies

Macaron vs Macaroon

None of them is a typo

Photo by Keila Hötzel on Unsplash

If you google the two keywords in the title separately, it almost always comes out like the image above.

At first, I thought that between the two words maybe one of them was just a typo. But it turns out I realized I was wrong when I watched the television show Masterchef Indonesia and was quite interested in the last challenge at the pressure test section.

Contestants were challenged to make macarons. Because of one and another thing I didn’t see a whole that part but, I was curious what kind of food it is and try to find out.

Well, I didn’t know exactly how to spell it, so I just use google assistant and pronounce it with my version.

I was quite surprised because some of the pictures even showed one food that was far from what I imagined. The result showed macaroon pictures. My heart says how come it’s different huh?

I just scroll the page down and find other topics that are still related to those that were suggested by google.

The first one I saw is “macarons vs macaroons” and reflect to click it and found a picture above. Okay, both of them are real and exist but in profound contrast.

Before I tell you the difference, I want to show you the image version of the macaroon that I mean in case you also don’t know like me before. Here’s the appearance

Okay, get on with it. Here are some differences :

Main Ingredients

Macaron is almond flour-based while macaroon was made from grated coconut. Although both of them need egg white, salt, and vanilla extract.

Characteristic

Macaron is a delicate, eggshell-like crust with a meringue inner texture while macaroon is lumpy, dense, and chewy.

Other than that, the macaron has filled in the middle with either buttercream, fruit jam, or ganache but in macaroons, shredded coconut creates an authentic taste and textures

Texture

Macaron isn’t too crumbly so easier and cleaner to eat.

Well, macaroons is often so crunchy and a bit messy when eaten.

Popularized Country

As a matter of fact, both macarons and macaroons come from Italy. The divergence is just the country that makes them known.

The macaron was popularized in French, whereas the macaroon in the UK.

The difficulty level of cooking

Macaron is a complex dish so demands finesse to make it. Any other way, a macaroon is simpler to produce.

Variety & Color

Macaron has a variation color and mostly uses bright colors whereas, macaroon has only one specific color which is golden brown.

Flavor

Like their color, macarons also have a diversity of flavors such as chocolate, any kind of fruit, vanilla, mocha, caramel, and matcha even there are types of savory macarons.

Another case about macaroons that mostly have very limited flavor, that are often added is chocolate-dipped and lemon-flavored.

Calories Number

There are approximately 250 calories in a macaron and about 90 in a coconut macaroon.

Price

Obviously, macaron will be more pricey cause by reason of that more effort to make it. In the same quantity, macaron prices are almost two-fold higher than macaroons.

Expired Time

The macaron was suggested to enjoy within a couple of days after baking when you can save macaroon until 3 months after making it as long as frozen.

So now that you know about macarons and macaroons, you’ll probably spend the next few weeks correcting all your friends and family when they confuse the two. I’ve only just tasted the macarons.

But I have never found a macaroon in my country. I hope to be able to taste it soon.
