Loving and Living with Vampires - Binge-Worthy Books

Reviewing Richelle Mead’s Supernatural YA Series about a Vampire Academy

I’m a big fan of YA Novels, in particular those featuring supernatural beings living as part of the real world — I like monsters in plain sight. Throw away any preconceptions that this series is anything like Twilight, except that it features vampires and navigating life as a teenage girl. I saw more parallels with Harry Potter than Bella Swan, but let’s not get tangled up in comparisons.

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

Is actually book six, the last in the series of the Vampire Academy series, but it’s been such an exciting storyline that I’ve sped through all the novels pretty fast! I had to read this one and its predecessor back to back, as Spirit Bound (book 5) ended on a total cliffhanger.

Vampire Academy works from the premise that vampires (called Moroi in this ‘imagining’) live amongst mortals in a separate, secret society. They drink blood from willing donors and have guardians from a vampire-human hybrid race (Dhampir). These guardians are trained from birth to act as bodyguards and security to the Moroi.

The threat in these books comes mostly from Strigoi, who are vampires turned bad.

They are preternaturally-strong, and lightning-fast, without a shred of emotion or conscience. A bite from a Strigoi will ‘turn’ a peace-loving Moroi or Dhampir into a blood-crazed creature that is unable bear sunlight on their chalk-white skin and red ringed eyes.

Books 1–3

These focus on the challenges faced by headstrong Rose (Damphir), who protects Lissa (Moroi royalty). The setting is the academy St Vladimir’s, where Rose undergoes training to be a kick-ass guardian. Being a cute, curvy girl, Rose is frequently underestimated, which both frustrates her and works to her advantage. Rose has a rebellious streak, and excels at guardian training, but finds herself battling with a forbidden attraction.

Lissa and Rose have been friends since childhood. When Lissa lost her family, Rose was there when the tragedy occurred. Perhaps because of this, they share a rare bond, allowing Rose to sense Lissa’s emotions.

Books 4–6

Rose is removed from the relative safety of the Academy and face dangers from Strigoi, Morois and Dhampirs, none of whom operate according to regulations to which she’s become accustomed. Forced to form unusual alliances, who can she trust? Rose maintains a mental link with Lissa, who has remained at the Academy to train in the politics and diplomacy required for her life as a Moroi. But in secret Lissa struggles to harness a unique power that has a dark side, pushing her towards insanity.

Are you intrigued?

I hope so! The whole series is fast-paced and compelling, each novel is a rollercoaster that hurtles the action to its climactic conclusion, perfect for binge reading.

The characters are well-drawn and their motivation is relatable while exploring the many angles of love and relationships.

Those who jump in with both feet and ask questions later will be on Team Rose. However, as a rule-follower and being less confident, I found my affinity with Lissa. Sydney is another strong woman whose character develops in the later books. Now to review the cast of eligible men. Do you want a rich boy with bad habits? Or a rebel who is unable to put his past behind him? Maybe you prefer to love someone dependable and strong, who imposes high expectations on you. They all populate this exciting saga, a supernatural world hidden within the world as we mortals know it.

Richelle Mead

Richelle Mead is an American author who comes from Michigan and has won awards for writing supernatural fiction for the YA market. She has two sons. In an interview with Teen Penguin, she described it as a ‘no brainer’ to write a strong, sassy female character who could ‘kick-ass’. She was also keen to weave mythology into her plotlines.

There was a film made of the first book called Vampire Academy, which in my opinion did not do the book justice.

All 6 Vampire Academy novels, in chronological order:

  • Vampire Academy
  • Frostbite
  • Shadow Kiss
  • Blood Promise
  • Spirit Bound
  • Last Sacrifice
