Summary

The poem "Look Into My Soul" by Jonathan Greene expresses the intimate connection between the speaker and the reader, urging the reader to see beyond the speaker's exterior to the love and truth that reside within the speaker's soul.

Abstract

"Look Into My Soul" is a deeply personal poem that delves into the theme of true understanding and connection. The speaker implores the reader not to be deceived by their outward appearance or the facade they present to the world. Instead, they invite the reader to gaze into their soul, where an image of the reader is kept, symbolizing the profound impact they have on the speaker. The poem speaks of a love that transcends time and space, existing in the past, present, and future. It emphasizes that the speaker's soul, filled with truth, is a reflection of the reader. The speaker acknowledges the difficulty in seeing past their stoic and mistrustful exterior but assures that the effort will reveal the light within, which recognizes the reader. The poem concludes by contrasting the superficial interpretations of others with the reader's unique role as the speaker's muse, suggesting that in the speaker's soul, the reader will find everything they have been searching for.

Don’t look at the surface This facade I maintain to steer away the errant novelty of life’s ephemera

Look into my soul Behind my eyes and what you will see there is an image of you

It’s where I keep this future memory of love even if it’s also present and past and here and there because inside my soul is the truth and without a doubt, you are the truth

Don’t think that this look The one I hold on my face of stoic confidence and generalized mistrust is representative of my soul because deep within the corners of my heart lie all of the answers

Look into my soul even when you think you can’t see because the harder you try and the deeper you see the more the light will shine back on you because it recognizes you

Don’t let others fool you with their interpretation of my outward appearance because they are an audience and you are my muse

Look into my soul and you will find all that you were looking for A Saturday afternoon you, me, and the future all sitting together in this moment
