Living in Portugal — Supermarkets

I’ve been in Portugal for more than a year now, it’s time to share some simple life experiences in Portugal… For every immigrant or traveller to Portugal, contacting the local supermarkets and grocery shops can be the best starting point to understand the Portuguese culture and living habits. The author can always learn a bunch of Portuguese words and phrases…

There is also an Aidi close to home. Although it is located on a hill, it is only a 4–5 minute ride on an electric scooter. Aidi is also a famous supermarket in Europe. I often buy food from Southeast Asia and other European countries….

There are four supermarkets near the author’s home. The nearest one is only about 5 minutes away, and the other two larger supermarkets can be reached in 10 minutes occasionally, I would use an electric scooter, which only takes 4–5 minutes…

Which supermarket is better depends very much on which supermarket is closest to where you live or work… The amount of stock and cleanliness of each supermarket will also directly affect your desire to visit… There may also be specific Southeast Asian foods or specialities that will attract you to visit…

Backgrounds

The average net disposable income per household in Portugal is €18,287 per year / €1,500 per month, below the OECD average. Rents have risen geometrically in recent years, with a one-bedroom flat in the Lisbon area now likely to cost €700–900. The amount of money that can be spent at the supermarket each month has been squeezed, and with the war in Russia and Ukraine, the standard of living of the average Portuguese has dropped, and even the Portuguese middle class are struggling to make ends meet…

Portugal’s major cities, such as Lisbon, Porto, have a population of about 5 million, Porto 2.5 million, Amadora 1.8 million, and the other major cities fall between 100,000 and 50,000…

The concentration of the urban population in the major cities greatly affects the distribution of supermarkets and the variety of goods they can offer… The selection of supermarkets in major cities differs from that of local towns…

This article will focus on Pingo Doce, Lidi

What are the big supermarkets in Portugal?

Generally speaking, most supermarkets are very typical and will carry food and general household items. However, in larger towns and cities, you will find some ‘hypermarkets’. They usually stock everything from toys to garden furniture, as well as a huge variety of groceries. These are the closest thing to a one-stop shop and are what most people would call a hypermarket.

Opening hours.

Most supermarkets in Portugal operate daily between 8am and 10pm. Some open or close earlier or later depending on their location. The good news is that most are closed at lunchtime and on weekends!

The price difference between supermarkets and daily food in Portugal can be very significant, maybe 20–40%. For example, water (1.5L bottled water, supermarket brand 0.28, imported brand can reach 1.2 or more…). Even for the same branded product, supermarkets will often do special offers, and the reduction can be up to 20–40% or more… The price difference between a product made in Portugal and an imported product can be 30–50% or more… Supermarket brand 6L bottled water is around 0.9…imported water may cost 1.6…

Although different brands of supermarkets have different positioning and prices, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  1. The price difference between local brands and imported brands can be more than 20–40%… If you buy Portuguese food and supplies, it will be much cheaper, but most of the Portuguese products are basics…
  2. Many products are subject to long-term price reductions, which can range from 20 to 50% over a long period of time.
  3. Fruits and vegetables from Portugal are very cheap and tasty, with a very high CP value….
  4. The quality, choice and availability of fish and seafood in Portugal is also quite good…
  5. Portuguese red and white wines are very cheap…there are plenty of choices in supermarkets from 2–5 eur, which is probably cheaper than buying a Coke as a daily wine…
  6. Apply for a supermarket membership card and buy at the member price, often there will be discounts or vouchers that you can save for your next purchase…
  7. Pingo Doce, Auchan , Continente will often have price reductions of 20–40% on goods…
  8. Lidi, Aidi and other low-cost supermarkets, the daily price is already cheap, and there are not many chances to encounter a big price reduction….
  9. Early this year, more than 40 kinds of daily food products were exempted from VAT tax until the end of 2023 to cope with the inflation brought about by the war between Ukraine and Russia. I wonder if this will continue next year….
  10. Major supermarkets have fully supported e-payment, but many locals still use cash to pay…
  11. When you are queuing up to pay, you will often come across the cashier chatting with an elderly person for a few minutes, so if you are in a hurry, you will really feel anxious XD
  12. Supermarkets also offer free or paid delivery for purchases over a certain amount, but the delivery process often misses orders or makes mistakes, so it is not recommended to use the delivery service if you are new to Portugal…

The main supermarkets featured today are Pingo Doce and Lidl, which also carry a wide range of products including fresh produce, meat and dairy products. They also offer a wide range of packaged food, household goods and other products.

The nearest supermarket to the author is Pingo Doce, a smaller supermarket is only about 5 minutes away. It takes about 10 minutes to reach another larger Pingo Doce. There are also Pingo Doce GO Convenience Store versions at many train stations.

Pingo Doce is the largest supermarket chain in Portugal, operating since 1980, with over 400 shops nationwide.

I mostly buy around 20–30 euros each time, as there are 2–3 supermarkets near my home, so I don’t need to buy a lot of food every time. The Pingo Doce pictured above, cost 14.08 Euro in total. The price of Coke is reduced to 3.15 (original price 4 euro for two 1.75L), the Portuguese Coke, no matter in the sweetness, the air is also very satisfactory to the author, even better than the Japanese version! Pingo Doce Brand 600g Rectangular Pack 0.93e Supermarkets often have “best before” sales, with discounts of around 25–40%.
Large supermarkets will have a meat counter, seafood counter and bread counter, so the food will be fresher… Just made tight salmon steak special price, 10.99 1kg, about three big pieces of fish steak, salmon steak has excellent taste, it can have fish flavour and very fresh…
The Portuguese have a great fondness for desserts, but the flavour is extremely sweet for the Chinese! Vegetables and fruits can be priced on a self-service basis… Poutine in supermarkets is good, I always buy it when the price is reduced to 0.33…ha!
Take dishwasher detergent as an example… The price of 3.19 in the picture is for 50 grains, and supermarket price lists are not always updated until it’s time to pay… Go there a few times and you’ll get used to the slow pace of the Portuguese… The local brand’s basic 3.79 / 60 pcs @ 0.06…even after Finish’s price reduction, the price is 4.99 / 26 pcs @ 0.19… If I were to buy Finish, I would most likely buy 100 capsules of Finish Jumbo Pack, which is about 0.14 per capsule…. If I buy Finish, I would buy 100 pcs of Finish Extra Large, which is about 0.14 pcs… I also buy Ultra Basic + Finish at the same time… If I don’t have too many dishes to wash, I would use Ultra, if I have too many greasy dishes, I would use Finish…. Ultra mopping head 2.49 , Vileda 5.49, the price difference can be double, if you want to buy Vileda, I would wait for 20–30% price reduction before buying … Ultra Dishwasher Salt 1kg 0.44, Finish 25% off 1kg 2.35, price difference can be double… I use Ultra & Finish dishwasher salt at the same time…
About 2–2.5 or so will buy about 200g of grated cheese…supermarket brand will be about 20% cheaper… When I came to Portugal, I bought more cheeses, creamy pasta, etc…. The price of fruit juice is mostly in the range of 0.99–1.39, I also often buy pear juice…
These are taken from a supermarket in my neighbourhood… Portuguese wine is basically very cheap… 2–5Euro is already a huge selection… 5 Euro should be enough to buy a good everyday wine. Of course, the bigger supermarkets also have a selection of 10–20Euro… Do you have any friends who can recommend some cheap everyday wines to try?
White and red wine 2–5 Eur is indeed a great choice… Local beer Super Bock / Sargers is also very cheap, about 0.6 330ml… I usually buy 30x 20ml for about 0.4 a stick…
Portugal has many choices of seafood, the author often buy salmon steak, the reduced price is about 10.99 1kg, there can be three pieces…. Octopus, mussels and squid are also my favourite seafood…
The prices of milk and butter products have increased by more than 10–20% compared to a year ago… The Portuguese are mainly pork eaters, and they will cook pig offal, pig’s ear and pig’s knuckle as well… In fact, their eating habits are very close to Chinese tastes… They even sell chicken feet and cow pat leaves.
Portuguese people also like to eat rice as their staple food, the price is around 0.99–1.99 1KG… It is a pity that most of the people who buy it are skinny or dry… I like to eat sushi rice, but the price is around 2.4 1KG. Usually, when the price is reduced to 1.6, I would buy a few more packs…

Local branded & supermarket branded spaghetti is around 0.8–1 Eur depending on the regular price or sale price… Barilla international brand spaghetti is priced at 1.99 regular price, but most of the time you will buy it at special price around 1.09…before the war, it was 0.99/0.78. Molisana & Rummo spaghetti, 500g price is 1.99–2… I usually buy it when the price is reduced to 1.49… The price of Molisana 1kg in the picture is only 2.09, the price is not too far from the local brands… However, Molisana & Rummo pasta does have a good egg flavour and better texture…
Lisbon is a hard water area. We usually buy 6L of water in bottles, which is about 0.86 per litre. Brita water filter should be used by many friends…. I used to buy from Amazon ES, the price will be 20–40% lower than the local price….
When I’m abroad, I try to cook with more different seasonings, and I probably have more than 10 bottles at home, garlic salt, sweet chilli powder, vanilla…
I cook it once a week. Tomato and Red Wine Beef Short Ribs. When you live abroad, Instant Pot may be a new tool for many of your friends’ kitchens…. Try cooking with red and white wine instead of cooking wine. 1L of red/white wine is only 0.86e.
I also buy 2–3 packs of salad greens every week, prices range from 0.99–1.49e… 300g chopped lettuce 0.93e
Originally founded in Germany, Lidl is now one of the most popular discount supermarket chains throughout Europe. Prices are very reasonable and there is a wide range of international foods.
I bought some vegetables and meat for 21.83 euros. When I came to Portugal, I bought a lot of different fruits, and every month there are different kinds of fruits… The price is also very cheap… The apple in the picture above is only 1.09, and the pear is only 1.02.
The author used to buy nuts and peanuts from Lidi as snacks, the price ranges from 0.99–3.99 or so…. Most of the time, I buy pork, pork and beef from Lidi…they are also from Portugal… Mini Mix Classic snow fries are also a nice and light dessert after dinner.

Lidi leaflet:

Portugal’s price index should be considered cheap in the European region, but compared to a year ago when I first arrived, due to the war, there is a sense of inflation in all kinds of food… the price stays the same and the portions/pieces are reduced… the only thing you can do is to reduce the price is to buy a little bit more, or to look for a substitute…

Most of my daily food purchases come from different supermarkets, the price/freshness may not be as good as the local grocery shops or markets in Portugal, but shopping in supermarkets is relatively convenient, and you can buy all your daily necessities in one go. As supermarkets also use e-payment, 99% of the purchases in the past year have been made with a Wise Debit card, and the only thing that I need to do is to use cash for my children’s school fees…

Due to the relatively low wages in Portugal, the amount of money available for shopping has become less and less. To be honest, the author also thinks that the amount of money spent on supermarkets by the locals is not enough to cover their daily needs… Many of the high inflation brought by the wars in Portugal have become too much… Therefore, the supermarkets provide relatively less types of high quality ingredients or foreign food… But of course, there should be no problem with the basic daily cooking needs… Of course, you can also go to El Corte Ingles, a large Spanish department store in Lisbon. But of course you should have no problem with basic cooking… Of course you can also go to El Corte Inglés, a large Spanish department store in Lisbon, which has a larger selection of food from different countries, but of course the prices will be about 10–30% higher! …
