Life Is a Window Sill

What are you looking at?

You know, cats and house plants have something in common. They both spend inordinate amounts of time sitting on window sills.

They just sit there looking out the window at the world unfolding outside. They will sit there for hours staring at a world that is outside of the confined world in which they live. What do those plants and kitty cats think as they watch the endless activity in the world on the other side of the pane of glass?

What do you think about when you look outside the window?

Windows can be such wonderful things. They provide openings through which we can view that which is outside of our mental boxes. They open us up and reconnect us to the world we are part of.

I happen to be a window freak (and that has nothing whatsoever to do with Bill Gates). Whenever I tour a prospective new apartment to move into my primary concern is always windows. Are there enough windows? Do they face in all directions? What is viewable from those windows?

Once I move into a new apartment my first order of business is always to tear down any mini-blinds or curtains or draperies from those windows. Seriously, what is the point of having a window if you’re just going to cover it up? Seriously!

(By the way, you may have noticed that I used the noun, draperies, rather than the verb, drapes. The misuse of those words is one of the most common grammatical errors in the American language.)

I prefer my windows naked. I also prefer to be naked and that may be why I always end up in upstairs apartments.

But I digress…

The truth is that there really is no such thing as a truly naked window. There is always a pane of glass that separates the worlds on either side of that glass. I have always found it interesting that both glass and cement are made using sand. Yet you can look through one and not the other.

But I digress even further…

Imagine you are going for a pleasant walk around the neighborhood. This is something we all do, right? You just have to get out of the house so you go for a walk. It’s a very pleasant, sunny afternoon. Maybe you’re whistling, maybe you’re not. Hopefully, you’re not thinking about anything. Hopefully, you’re just enjoying your walk and everything you encounter.

Suddenly you find yourself walking past an apartment building. You look up at the second floor of the apartment building and you see a kitty cat sitting in a window… LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU!

How does that make you feel?

Thoughts aside, you keep walking. After all, that is what our legs are for, right? On the next block you pass yet another apartment building and, once again, you end up looking up at the second floor of that apartment building. In the window of that second floor apartment building you see a delightful jade plant in a pot on a window sill. And it is… LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU!

How does that make you feel?

While there may be a pane of glass separating you from the kitty cat and the jade plant, is there a pane of glass separating the kitty cat from the jade plant in your noggin? What role does a pane of glass play in your perception? How viewed do you feel when going for a walk in the neighborhood? How many panes of glass separate you from a full experience of that walk?

Okay, maybe I am digressing way too much. Perhaps the important question is…

… what’s on your window sill?

Or…

… how Windex-clean is the glass you’re looking through?

Or perhaps more importantly…

… how much time do you spend on both sides of that glass?
