Where’s our place?

I went looking on Facebook for a place to connect with other Medium users — a place to share our writing and lift each other up. What I found was a little too scary for my non-binary trans butt! There were a few groups with many thousands of followers but when the first article I saw was about flatulence, I knew we had a problem.

There was no guarantee these members were Medium Member subscribers and with those numbers, most probably weren’t. My favorite thing about Medium paid memberships is that trolls don’t spend money to troll, so I feel safe here. I didn’t feel that same safety with those Facebook pages. So, I went looking specifically for Medium writer groups for the LGBT2SQIA+ community and you know what I found? Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Disappointing but not all that surprising.

Let me fill that gap

You may have noticed by now, I’m the kind of person that if I see a gap, I’ll fill that sucker quick smart. And so that’s what I did. I created a private Facebook group where our community writers can gather, share, inspire, and lift each other up. And yes, omg yes, allies who write from a unique perspective in relation to the community are so welcome. For now, it will accept members who are not yet subscribers of Medium (those trying to earn enough to pay for that membership) but I’ll be taking a hard line on trolls and gatekeepers.

This IS and WILL REMAIN a safe place for our community and community supporters!

Let’s Connect

I’m not a leader as such. I’m the one that stands back and waits for someone else to lead. But I’m also the one that will only wait a certain amount of time before I step up and say, “Fine, I’ll lead… for now.” Because I am good at it. It’s just not my preferred state of existence.

This is absolutely not about me taking on some kind of leadership role — in fact, I hope that I won’t have to do too much at all and that everyone will just play, have fun, and lift each other. If it grows, I would hope to bring others in as admins. I don’t want to ‘control’ it, I just want to give our community writers the representation and connection we all deserve.

Head over to the group and let’s connect!
