I had recently joined a senior citizens association and then went away to the USA to be with my son.👍
On returning, I could not attend a single meeting of the association.
I received a call from the secretary that this weekend is very special.
It is very important for me to attend a meeting at the senior citizen hall. I pleaded that it may not be possible to reach at 10 A.M. on a Saturday because I have some other commitments.
He ruled out my excuses and said that there is no way that I will not attend. I need to be introduced to the other people of the association as I had not attended any of their meetings.
Friday night, I decided that I would definitely go to the senior citizen’s meeting on Saturday morning.
This weekend it was a perfect day on Saturday morning. A cool breeze was blowing and there was a very light drizzle. It felt like somebody was sprinkling water lightly on me.
It was like a sweet rain that did not harm anyone. People like me did not even use an umbrella. It was lovely to get little light drops of water making you feel cool and comfortable. It was a respite from the terrible heat that we had been suffering from this whole week.
I drove and reached the venue exactly at 10'O clock. I was surprised to see the presence of people from the age of 60 to 98. The hall was full. People were looking quite energetic and happy to meet each other. There was a vibrancy in the air.
- The agenda was to celebrate the birthday of those members whose birthday was in the month of September.
- After that, there was an awareness talk on medical insurance for seniors by a leading insurance company.
The names of the three ladies and the gentleman in the picture were called out. They were asked to come and cut the cake.
The gentleman was a nonagenarian. He was 98 years old. Everybody wanted him to cut the cake.
Mr. C.P. Pal was his name was excited. He was happy to cut the cake. He smiled and asked the three ladies who also had their birthdays in September to hold his hand and cut the cake with him. He wanted the ladies to be first and they wanted him to cut the cake so the tussle went on for some time and everybody was having fun.
Mr. C. P. Pal gave a little thanksgiving talk.
The nonagenarian was beaming with happiness.
He stood up straight. Someone gave him his stick. Although he was slightly bent he was not in a wheelchair.
Lessons learned from the nonagenarian
- He was living happily at 98 and wanted to celebrate his 100th birthday with all of us. He inspired me to keep going in my life.
- He had hope and trusted the people around him. He said that love is all you need to live a happy life. You must spend time with all your friends. Keep sharing good times and bad times together.
- His advice was to laugh every day with people and with yourself. If there is no one around you laugh in the mirror. It brings you happiness. This touched me and was good advice on self-care.
- To be generous and modest. He brought the cake and shared it with us. He was generous and spread his love to everyone.
- He was nurturing friendships with some friends for the last 60 years of his life. Some of his friends were no longer there. He missed them and laughed that he would meet them in heaven.

It was a great weekend and I was happy that I spent my time with other people and learned from them to live a full life with joy and positivity. Old is certainly gold.
