Laughing Through Tears — Writing Challenge
Humorous-Emotional Poem Challenge
Again, I struggled to find a little writing inspiration when I came across Ray Day’s poetry challenge, and he asked me to participate when I commented on his article.
And I admit these challenges do help when I am in one of those writing funks.
Ray Day’s Challenge Comments
I challenge you to create a humorous-emotional piece of writing that strikes the perfect balance between humor and emotion, taking your readers on a journey that will make them both laugh and feel deeply. Let your creativity run wild and see where it takes you!
Thank you for sharing this challenge with us, Ray!
All right! Let me plunge right in with this.
Betsy was bleeding vital fluids all over the floor. She was not doing well, for sure.
I rushed her in for a checkup and prayed she was not suffering too much. She is not a young filly anymore.
Betsy is a dear friend, loyal beyond measure. She has been with me through the highs and lows for many years.
People tell me she is too old, suggesting it is time to let her go. But she is family to me. How can I let her grow old alone?
He examined Betsy and returned with a stare, shaking his head with no hope to share.
We walked into a room, and he gave me the unsettling news. Betsy needed a rebuild, but the waiting list for parts was long — especially for a car as ancient as Betsy, a classic beauty in my heart.
He told me it might be time to say goodbye. Then I pleaded. “Is there something else we can try?”
I wanted to give Betsy a few more years, getting her running and happy again. He agreed to attempt something new.
Betsy could not come home for quite a long time; I worried if the new procedure would turn out all right.
I received a call and held my breath. “Sir, your car is ready now. The procedure was a success.”
I shouted for joy, high fives, and fist pumps to my wife and kids.
“Betsy is coming home,” I shouted, tearing up a little.
