A tribute to Kirstie Alley

Kirstie Alley dead at 71. Another celebrity death, we will mourn. Don’t you wish it was 2023 already? In 2022, John Travolta lost two of his dearest friends from cancer, Kirstie Alley and Olivia Newton-John. In 2020, he lost his wife, Kelly Preston. Diana Hyland his girlfriend in his 20s also died of cancer.

All four women, both friends, and lovers now gone because of cancer. When will we finally get rid of cancer? John Travolta isn’t alone, millions around the world will mourn someone they know who died of cancer.

People mourn the death of celebrities for many reasons. Some people may feel a deep personal connection to the celebrity and their work, while others may be saddened by the loss of someone who has brought joy and entertainment into their lives. Additionally, the death of a celebrity can be a reminder of our own mortality and the fleeting nature of life.

After Olivia Newton-John died this year, I remember a long-lost love story. It was my first love — my Danny to my Sandy.

If you look back at Grease, you would feel the chemistry between John and Olivia, and yet they were never more than friends.

A wise decision for both of them, as they remained friends till the day Olivia Newton-John died. A good forty years of friendship, to which both believed if they ended up together as a couple, neither one thinks it would have lasted.

And I found out so was it with Kirstie Alley.

They did a few movies together, Look Who’s Talking, Look Who’s Talking Too (1990) and Look Who’s Talking Now (1993).

Kirstie Alley said, she would have married John if she was single, but when they first met she was married to Parker Stevenson, and a few years later John got married to Kelly Preston.

Back in 2018, Alley admitted that she continued flirting with Travolta even after he married Preston — that is, until Preston herself put an end to it.

To all our friends, far and wide around the world…

We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered.

She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.

We are grateful to the incredible team of doctors and nurses at the Moffitt Cancer Center for their care.

Our mother’s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did.

We thank you for your love and prayers and ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.

Final words

When Olivia Newton-John died, John Travolta had this to say about her,

My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John! — John Travolta

Now John has this to say about Kirstie,

Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again. — John Travolta

Life and Death. As one breathes their first, one day they will breathe their last.

It is a cycle.

As for choosing to be friends with someone you love, why wouldn’t you, right,

friendship outlive and outlast a romantic relationship.

But sometimes I wonder, what could have been? And I have a few of those, the boy I call Danny, the one whose birthday is on the same day as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and the guy I met in Napier.

Only one remains a friend, if I can even call him that, we had a memorable video call in 2020, a welcome surprise during the pandemic. He has become a doctor as he promised me when I first met him in 2009.

A look back on my Facebook memories, and I saw one of his messages,

It’s just the distance that makes it complicated.

Is he the greatest love of my life, he could have been? It is easy to romanticize what didn’t happen.

But I’m happy that we met.

And I’m sure John Travolta is happy that he met Olivia Newton-John and Kirstie Alley.
