Kindness Is A Personal Leadership Strength and Not A Weakness.

Have you ever been told that to succeed in this dog-eat-dog world, you must be ruthless and that kindness will only hold you back? Maybe you’ve seen shifts towards ‘you have to be more self-centred’ to win in today’s world. This misconception is prevalent on social media and offline. I believe this is dangerous because it impacts every aspect of society.

I might be overly optimistic, but kindness is a super strength in today’s world. It will lead you to success, happiness, and fulfilment. Indeed, being kind is a no-brainer. Sadly, that’s not always the case.

The World Needs Kindness

Right now, the world needs a lot of TLC. I’m not talking about the rescue type of kindness but everyday and practical issues. Kindness can be as simple as smiling at someone, opening the door or picking up litter in the streets. More please.

Sadly, we’ve learnt to accept that some people might be unkind as we go about our everyday lives. Thankfully, I don’t see too much of that sort of behaviour in my everyday world in London. But I feel annoyed when I see it like people with their feet on the seats, not readily giving up their seats for someone who needs it more or not saying please and thank you.

Lack of Kindness

I’m not painting everyone with the same brush. However, I’ve seen some ugly behaviour online recently. You’ve probably heard that the Royal Family in The U.K. is facing a tough time now, especially with the Princess of Wales being diagnosed with cancer.

The keyboard warriors were in their element across the world as they spewed their vitriol and fuelled baseless claims towards the Princess of Wales. I appreciate freedom of speech and the right to express opinions. However, when it hurts someone physically or emotionally, it’s unacceptable.

The Royal Family

Having two members of a family battling cancer is never easy, but one is the King and the other a future Queen. The Princess of Wales chose to go public yesterday. She didn’t need to, but hopefully, she did so because she wanted to and not because of the speculation or the conspiracy theories that were making the rounds.

No person should have to tolerate the unkindness that we’ve seen towards her. It was downright cruel and disrespectful. Instead of backing off and letting someone deal with their feelings and problems in private, the gossip mongers shifted gears.

What does this sort of behaviour say about us as humans? Have we forgotten the basics that hold societies together, such as empathy, kindness, and compassion? I hope not, and I pray we see more kindness for people we know and don’t know.

We’ve Done It Before

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw loss, fatigue, despair, fear, pain, restlessness, boredom and apathy, but I also saw the best of humanity, compassion, kindness, support and love. I saw bridges built and relationships strengthened. I also saw hope in the smallest of gestures.

I hope we will use this historical moment to step up again and show more kindness.
