Just Start Writing-It’s Good For the Soul

Let Your Thoughts Flow-It’s Truly Relaxing Whether Working or Retired

I have been writing here on Medium since December of 2020. Before that I wrote a blog on Blogger for about 7 years. The best part about Medium is the interaction with other writers. It’s great to get feedback and also give feedback to others. We’re all in this journey together. Will I get rich? I doubt it. But I have enjoyed this adventure called writing.

Put simply, I just love to write. For some reason, it’s very relaxing and allows me to vent if you will. We have always known that talking, especially to loved ones, is highly recommended and allows you to express your feelings which acts to release tensions we may have. We always feel better after talking to each other. But sometimes doing this quietly has its benefits. I recommend a combination of both. So relax in your favorite chair, open your laptop, and see what thoughts flow. I guarantee you will find it relaxing.

I find first thing in the morning is a great time to write. Although I do also write sometimes in the evenings while watching TV. But morning seems better. Before I put on the news. Sometimes before my wife gets up. Quiet. Just me, my coffee, and the tapping of keys. No distractions.

Of course, I now have the luxury of this morning time frame now that I am retired. If I was working I wouldn’t have this lovely window of time with no responsibilities, no rushing to get ready for work. That is a given. If you are still working, try to carve out a time, perhaps after work, to write. Even if it’s only half an hour you will be surprised what you can do in that time.

For those who follow me, you know I write about various topics. Birdwatching, gardening, outdoor adventure. I also write about retirement, with my goal to help people who may be struggling with adjusting to retirement so that they can get the most enjoyment from it.

I have lots to write about, my many hobbies and experiences. It’s just fun. As I said above, I find pleasure in sharing my hobbies as to allow others to enjoy them also if they choose. I hear often about retirees who are bored and don’t know how to fill their time. For me, it is often the opposite. Not enough time to do everything I want to do.

Even while working, I somehow found time for my hobbies. After work, I would take at least an hour to do some gardening, yard work, or other things which helped me decompress from the workday.

The more things you do, the more there is to write about. I realize writing is not for everyone. I get it. Not everyone is a writing geek. But it works for me. I enjoy expressing thoughts about what I do. Maybe some will find it boring. Yada Yada Yada. I understand. But it probably prevents me from talking so much, just ask my wife!

For those who are new to Medium, I encourage you to keep writing. It takes some time to get noticed here but you will get followers, you will get claps, and you should get lots of good comments from other writers. And you may even make a little extra cash as well.
