June Interview Questions (My Responses):

[1] As a writer, how do you come up with new ideas? How do you capture them so that they are ready when you sit down to write?

New ideas seem to constantly bombard my brain. I carry a recorder with me a lot of the time just so that I can record little notes for future story ideas. Sometimes I’ll read something or hear a song that sparks ideas as well.

[2] On the spectrum of introvert — ambivert — extrovert, where would you place yourself? What are some reason(s) you think you might place in that position? Does it change depending on context?

Hands down, without a shadow of a doubt, I am an introvert. I much prefer being with my own thoughts and doing things on my own. I think that’s why I like reading and writing so much. I can be sitting alone with my ideas or just huddled on the couch reading a nice, long book. I DO NOT like crowds at all. I get very anxious and have massive attacks around large groups of people. I only have a few really good friends that I spend time with, and even then I am known to cancel at the last moment because I give myself anxiety about going out.

[3] What is your relationship with sound? Whether you interpret this word to encompass awkward silences in interactions to the connection found through music, take us on a journey on how you relate to the external world through this sense.

Music is a huge part of my life. Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to music. I am a big fan of classic rock (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and The Grateful Dead). This music just sort of seeps into my soul and gives me a sense of comfort when I’m feeling anxious or depressed.

[4] How has your culture or context shaped your beliefs about relationships and what they “should” look like? How much do you subscribe to those expectations?

I grew up in a single-parent home because my father passed away when I was 6 years old. From that point of view, a romantic relationship is not necessarily needed. That being said, I do have a sense of need as far as love or romance goes which sometimes drives me insane because when I develop feelings, I develop them to the max and quickly.

[5] What is one food that reminds you of childhood?

Grilled cheese or just cheese sandwiches take me back to my childhood. Every day for lunch, I would take an American cheese sandwich to school. if grilled cheese was offered for lunch in the cafeteria, you can bet I was getting it even if it tasted horrible. At home, my mother would have to make several grilled cheese sandwiches for me because I couldn’t just eat one. I was/am also a picky eater, so grilled cheese or just plain cheese sandwiches were a go to for me. It was simple and almost every place we would go had it available to order.

Top fives!

  • Who are 5 of your favorite musicians/ bands? - Bob Dylan - Grateful Dead - Neil Young - Sting/The Police - Creedance Clearwater Revival
  • What are your top 5 favorite fruits? - Pineapple - Oranges - Apples - Mangoes - Plums
  • What are your top 5 least favorite vegetables? - Tomatoes - Brussel Sprouts - Cabbage - Artichoke - Beets
  • What are 5 times in your life where you wish you took more time to celebrate? - My College Graduation- This was a big milestone in my life because I forced myself to go to college. After high school, I could have just worked full-time as a cashier at the convenience store that I was working at. I hated high school and just barely graduated. The decision to go on to college was mine and mine alone. No one expected me to go to college, and on top of that, to go away to college. That lasted a year and a half, then I transferred to a local university and finished my schooling there. I began with a major in accounting, but when I transferred, I switched to majoring in English Literature and Writing. I was much more comfortable with this and excelled at writing papers on different literary pieces and then writing my own stories. This also led to working at an Independent bookstore which I began managing after I graduated from college. I have been at this store ever since. - I can’t think of 4 other times right now. My college graduation was the major thing in my life.
  • What are 5 reasons that get you out of bed each morning? - Breakfast - Work - Writing about all the ridiculous things that I thought about or dreamt throughout the night - Reading new blogs - Listening to music
