Jumping the Timeline
Just happy to be here, happy to be alive.
June 20th: What would you do if you had unlimited time and no restrictions?
Have you heard the term “timeline jumping?” I’m not an expert in the concept, but from what I understand, it’s a sort of nebulous term that refers to a complete reality shift within a person’s life.
So, say someone is living on one “timeline.” She’s in a place where she hates basically everything about her life — her job, her fitness/lack thereof, the people around her — she’s unhappy across every dimension and she can see no possible way to change things.
Now let’s look at the same person two years later. According to her previous “timeline,” we’d expect her to be in the same place she was before, or likely further along the road to her personal hell.
But lo and behold, she’s not! She’s in an entirely different place. She’s doing work she loves (and that she’d never considered in the previous timeline), her friends are a different group of people, she’s in great shape, and — best of all — she’s happy. Like, truly happy in a way she didn’t know she could be.
What happened? Well, a lot happened. But to shorthand it, we can say she jumped timelines.
What do this story and timeline jumping have to do with the prompt of the day? Truthfully, it’s the best metaphor I could muster to illustrate the utter change that’s taken place in my life over the last two years.
In June of 2020, I’d only just decided to continue living. I knew that in order for that to be worthwhile, it would be necessary, if utterly terrifying, to dedicate myself entirely to the project of getting well, though I didn’t have a picture of what that would look like. It was a leap of faith. A jump from one timeline to another.
The person in the story is, of course, me. Two years ago I wouldn’t have believed how different my life would be now, and how fulfilled I’d be. Of course, there are some things I’d like to change. I’d be earning more money for doing what I love to do — and I believe that’s coming. That’s the next leap.
But the truth is that I really wouldn’t change much of anything about my life, even if I had unlimited time and no restrictions. The fact that I can say that today would have been unimaginable for the person I was two years ago.
And that’s how I know I jumped timelines.
KEY MESSAGE: Sometimes the internal leap is the biggest one possible when seeking to change your reality.
