Summary

Joipaw is a UK-based company developing a touchscreen gaming device aimed at enhancing cognitive abilities in dogs, with games that reward successful play with treats and potential health monitoring capabilities.

Abstract

Joipaw, a UK start-up, is revolutionizing the pet care industry with a touchscreen gaming device designed specifically for dogs. This innovative console, which includes a saliva-resistant screen and a treat dispenser, offers cognitive games that dogs can play by nosing the screen. The device, initially created to occupy the founder's dog, has evolved into a tool with the potential to improve canine cognition and even detect early signs of illness. Although the release date and pricing are yet to be determined, the company plans to expand the game library, including games for cooperative play between dogs and their owners, and introduce a leaderboard feature. Who knew that video games could even benefit dogs?

As I’m sure many of you know, some video games can benefit kids, teens, and even adults. They can help your concentration, creativity, memory, and even your language skills. I plan to talk more about this topic in a future post.

Although what I didn't know was that video games can even be beneficial for dogs. This was stated by a UK start-up called Joipaw, which is working on a touchscreen device that is intended to be used by dogs in order to benefit their cognition.

Currently, these games run on a small console with a short stand suited for the height of a dog. It features a large display with a saliva-resistant touchscreen. Your dog will simply use its nose to navigate through the games.

The device currently has two games. The first of which is a whack-a-mole style game, with the second being a puzzle in which dogs must identify which side of the screen has more bubbles.

If and when a dog successfully completes one of these puzzles, they will be awarded treats which will be dispensed from the base of the console.

Initially, the co-founder of Joipaw Dersim Avdar started working on this device as a means to keep his dog occupied. But after reading a study that indicated that touchscreen games could have cognitive benefits for dogs, he realized that this device could potentially have a more beneficial use.

The first question that came to my mind when I read about this device was, “How would I even begin to teach my dog to play a game on a touchscreen device?” Apparently, Joipaw has tested this device with two dozen dogs and found that the easiest way was to put peanut butter on the screen to draw the dogs attention to it.

Of course, it won't be as easy as that, but Joipaw has proven that it may be very difficult but not impossible.

Best of all, in addition to helping your dog's cognition, this device can even gather certain data to help identify a certain illness your dog may have. Spotting this kind of thing early on can potentially save multiple families from losing a man's best friend.

Unfortunately, there is no news on when this device will be released since the company is still developing a pricing model.

But fortunately, whenever it does release, the Joipaw will include a wider variety of games and puzzles, including a few games that your dog can play alongside you. There will even be a leaderboard so you can see which of your dogs is smarter. Luckily they won’t be able to recognize that information.
