Join Me in This January Challenge: Ignore Your Medium Stats for 30 Days

I dare you. Can you do it?

I’ve been writing on Medium for almost one month so I’m a very green writer. I’ve been doing what most new writers would do: reading tons of articles about growing my following, earning more and improving my stats.

I wake up every morning and I click on my stats button. I do a mini dance when I see those little green bars on the chart moving up and up. I give myself a high five when my partner program earnings creep up.

But… I also click on my stats at least 10 times per day. I watch my story view counts like they are horses at a racetrack. I feel disappointed when my new articles sit with 0 reads, even though I only posted them an hour ago.

As an aside: Some of my articles had next to no views for the first 1–2 days and then became my best-performing articles.

Suffice to say, I’ve been riding the emotional rollercoaster of Medium stats a little too much. And in return, I’ve been forgetting what really matters: honing my craft as a writer.

So, I’m going to correct this nasty little habit with a vow and a nice dose of public accountability.

I vow to ignore my Medium stats until January 31, 2022.

I will not click on the little “Stats” button for one whole month. Then, on February 1st, I plan to do a little analysis to see what came of it. I’ll share my learnings with all of you wonderful readers. Hint: Follow me if you’d like to read about the outcome.

What will I do instead?

I’m going to focus on what matters most: my writing. I’m going to delve deep into my love of words and crafting beautiful stories. I’m going to write stories that I personally love reading and be honoured when others feel the same.

Most of all, I’m going to let go of this rat race to the “big bucks” of Medium because I don’t want to squash my love of writing by trying too hard. I’m here to write simply because I love to write.

Will you join me in this January challenge?

With love, Megan
