Jewish Writers! Chicken Soup for the Soul is Looking for Hanukkah Stories

Here’s What You Need to Know

I’m a writer, but I’m also writing coach and editor-for-hire who works with writers to help them improve and publish their work. One market I’ve helped dozens of my writers break into is Chicken Soup for the Soul. This popular anthology series publishes stories on a variety of topics for their themed books — and pays $250 a story, plus 10 free copies.

Chicken Soup for the Soul publishes an annual collection of holiday stories. Although most of the tales are about Christmas, many writers don’t realize that these collections also include stories about Hanukkah — as well as Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, and New Year’s.

Which means? Chicken Soup editors are actively looking for stories about Hanukkah. And stories by Jews written about Christmas and other winter holidays.

I’m Jewish and my stories have been included in two of these holiday-themed collections, including this story, which first ran on Medium:

The submissions deadline for the 2024 collection of holiday stories is April 30, 2024.

What kind of stories do the Chicken Soup editors want?

What’s the word count?

How quickly do they respond to submissions?

Will they edit your work?

What rights do they buy?

When will you get paid?

The answers to all of these questions, including a link to their website, which includes their submissions portal, can be found here:

If you’re a Jewish writer who has written — or would like to write — a holiday story, go for it! And good luck.

Maybe we’ll end up in a book together!
