DAY 28 (April 19th, 2024) — What is Web API in JavaScript ?

Answer —

API means Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and in JavaScript, web API refers to a set of functions and methods provided by web browers that help users to interact with various aspects of the web platforms.

Client side JavaScript has many APIs available and these are not part of the JavaScript language itself, rather they are built on top of the core JavaScript language.

They provide extra superpower to use in our JavaScript code and play crucial role in web development.

Few Major categories of Web APIs are as follows

  1. DOM (Document Object Model)API’s

API’s for manipulating documents

2. Fetch API

API’s which help us to fetch data from server.

3. Canvas and WebGL API

API’s which help for drawing and manipulating graphics.

4. Web Storage API or Client Side Storage -

API’s which help to store data including local storage and session-storage.

5. Audio and Video API

API’s which help in manipulating and playing audio and video files.

6. XHR (XMLHttpRequest) API

Old API similar to Fetch API used for asynchronous HTTP requests in JavaScript.

7. Device or Geolocation API

API help to interact with device hardware i.e. Geolocation API

8. Third Party API’s

API’s like Google Map API’s, Facebook API’s, YouTube API’s etc.

9. Service worker APIs

Service workers essentially act as proxy servers that sit between web applications, the browser, and the network. Help in offline functionality , push notifications and caching strategies.

10. Web-RTC (Web Real Time communication API)

APIs help in real time communication between web browsers including audio and video calling, file sharing and data transfers
