I’ve Visited the Tallest Waterfalls in Austria

What I saw was not what I expected.

My husband and I left early morning on a Sunday from Feldkirch town to Salzburg to see the Krimml waterfalls. Traffic is smooth and pretty quiet on Sunday in Austria as almost every business were closed unlike the main cities like Vienna.

Krimml Waterfalls

Krimml Waterfalls in Austria are one of the most amazing natural wonders in Europe, according to the history and feedback from other tourists I was reading from TripAdvisor.

The waterfalls are located in the Hohe Tauern National Park and are fed by the Krimmler Ache River. The falls flow over three levels and have a total drop of 380 meters. The Krimml waterfalls are a popular tourist destination and offer stunning views of the falls and the surrounding mountains.

To give you an overview, I took a screenshot from Google Maps from where we started our drive toward Krimml Waterfalls.

We were using the Arlberg panoramic way, passing through villages. The St Cristoph, St Anton, and all the way to Salzburg were cloudy yet scenic.

As we were on the Salzburg highway, we spotted a dark green Corvette. The driver was interesting as he was wearing an interesting. Head covering. Then my husband told me that he is DJ Otzi.

Finally, we arrived at the parking lot and bought 2 tickets to enter Krimmil waterfalls.

The entrance cost 5 Euros per person.

Like many tourist attractions and locations, there are souvenir shops around and restaurants that do not really want to serve their customers how I think they were having some kind of service problem as we waited for about 20 minutes to place our orders and we were trying to have eye contact with the service crews and seems they ignore.

Many people sitting next to us stood up and left.

As for the waterfalls, it is nothing interesting to me.

The road is well done. Everyone can easily walk up, though it is a bit hilly, there is a fence you could hold onto if needed.

You can just wear normal walking shoes. However, can be difficult if you walk up on an icy road during winter. The falls are open for certain months. It is not open all year round. At this time of writing, they were only open until the end of October 2022.

2 hours later, we went back down to the parking space. For around 2 plus hours of parking, we paid 7.60 Euros.

We headed back home and use the Arlberg panoramic road again to avoid the highway fees of 10.50 Euros.

It was getting dark and I took the last image of that day. (The above image).

Wrapping Up

I was not really impressed by the beauty of the waterfalls. Yes, it could be the tallest waterfall in Austria but not that beautiful.

It is not necessary to fly or drive a long way just to see these waterfalls. But if you are in Salzburg or Innsbruck, yes it is a good way to go for a short hike which is about 7.8 kilometers from the ticketing area parking lot all the way up.

Here are things to do when near Salzburg instead of hiking to Krimml waterfalls in my own opinion as I consider myself local in Austria.

  • Hallstatt
  • Werfen World Largest Ice caves
  • Sound of Music Tour
  • Canyoning
  • See Salts mine
  • See Swarovski Museum

If I can think of more places to see near Salzburg, I will add them here.
