I’ve Been Prioritizing Time In Nature — And My Nervous System Has Never Been So Relaxed

We forget how healing nature can be.

In a world where stress and anxiety seem to lurk around every corner, finding peace and calmness can often feel like an elusive dream.

As someone who has grappled with a dysregulated nervous system for as long as I can remember, the search for tranquility has been an ongoing challenge — and the relentless urban pace only intensified my struggles.

A few months ago, someone I followed on Instagram casually mentioned the therapeutic powers of nature in one of their posts. At the time, I was desperate for any glimmer of hope. So, I made a commitment with myself. I decided to spend more time in nature, no matter how busy life got or how much my dysregulated nervous system resisted.

Nature, as it turned out, was about to become my greatest ally in soothing my restless soul.

Our Bodies Are Begging Us To Pause And Listen

In our relentless pursuit of quick fixes and immediate relief from anxiety, we often find ourselves turning to various supplements, therapies, and coping mechanisms.

We scroll through pages of wellness blogs, seeking that elusive remedy that promises to ease the turmoil within. We chase after the latest fads and trends, hoping they will offer the tranquility we crave. But amidst this fervent search for solutions, we often overlook the most natural and profound remedy of all — simply sitting still, breathing, and just being.

Our bodies possess an innate wisdom, an internal compass that guides us towards what we truly need.

When anxiety and stress take hold of our lives, it’s a sign that our nervous system is struggling to cope with the overwhelming demands of modern life. Yet, instead of heeding the subtle cues from within, we often drown them out with distractions and external fixes.

Think about it: when was the last time you allowed yourself to sit still, unburdened by the constant pull of screens and responsibilities?

When did you last take a deep breath, allowing the air to fill your lungs, and then exhale, releasing the tension that had built up inside?

We live in a world that perpetuates the notion that busyness equals productivity and that quietude is a sign of idleness.

The truth is, our bodies are begging us to pause, to listen, and to honor the need for stillness. Nature, in its serene majesty, beckons us to return to our roots, to find solace in its gentle embrace. It offers us the space to let go of our worries, release the cluttered thoughts that burden our minds, and reconnect with the simplicity of being.

Yet, we often overlook this profound gift that nature holds for us.

We might glimpse breathtaking landscapes on our screens, but how often do we truly immerse ourselves in the healing powers of the outdoors? How often do we allow ourselves to wander along the trails, to get lost in the whispering leaves, and to be captivated by the dance of sunlight on the water’s surface?

Nature Teaches Us To Surrender

A few days ago, I found myself at the beach, a place I often frequent to soak in the sun and enjoy the view.

Being sensitive to the cold, I usually refrain from venturing into the water. Yet, on this particular day, something inexplicable took over me, urging me to dip my toes into the sea. As if guided by an unseen force, I surrendered to the moment and stepped into the water.

At first, the sensation of the Atlantic Ocean against my skin sent shivers down my spine. I hesitated, uncertain if I could withstand the chill. But as I stood there, mesmerized by the rhythmic waves lapping at my feet, a surge of courage and curiosity overcame my reluctance.

I took a deep breath and allowed myself to fully immerse in the sea. In that very instant, something magical happened.

The sea embraced me with its loving embrace, as if recognizing my willingness to surrender to its power.

It was a transformative experience that seemed to transcend the physical realm. The weight of the world, the constant worries and stresses, began to dissolve with every gentle wave that caressed my skin. With each passing moment, I felt a sense of cleansing, not just of the sand from my skin, but also of the burdens that had weighed heavily on my heart.

As I swayed with the rhythm of the sea, I felt an indescribable connection to the vastness of the ocean. Its immensity reminded me of the magnitude of life and the countless possibilities that lay ahead.

In that serene space, my worries about the future and regrets from the past seemed insignificant, fading into the horizon like distant memories.

The sea, with its timeless wisdom, taught me to be present in the moment, to let go of control, and to trust in the ebb and flow of life. It was a lesson in surrender and acceptance, a reminder that sometimes, the most profound healing comes when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable to the forces beyond our comprehension.

In those magical moments, I lost track of time, and for the first time in a long while, I felt truly free.

It was as if the sea had cast a spell on me, liberating my soul from the confines of my worries and fears. The more I embraced the water, the more I could feel it embracing me back, a loving and nurturing force that left me with a deep sense of peace and serenity.

Nature Reminds Us of The Rhythm of Life

Nature has a unique way of reminding us of the rhythm of life — the ebb and flow of the tides, the changing seasons, and the cycles of growth and decay.

It teaches us that just as nature follows its course, so too must we trust in the unfolding of our own journey.

When we immerse ourselves in the natural world, we witness the seamless dance of life unfolding before us. Each sunrise marks a new beginning, while each sunset bids farewell to the day that was. The tides faithfully rise and fall, guided by the moon’s gentle pull, just as the seasons transition with unwavering certainty.

Anxiety often emerges when we cling to what has already passed or when we worry excessively about an uncertain future. But in the embrace of nature, we find an anchor in the present moment.

As we walk through a meadow adorned with wildflowers or stand in awe beneath ancient trees, our minds naturally align with the rhythm of nature. Worries about the past and fears about the future begin to lose their grip, overshadowed by the beauty and stillness that surround us.

Nature has taught me that true liberation from anxiety lies in grounding ourselves in the present moment, where life truly unfolds. I don’t need anything else — I just need to sit still and breathe.

While we search for external remedies, we fail to tap into the wellspring of peace that lies dormant within us.

The truth is, we possess an inherent capacity for inner healing and resilience. Within each of us lies a wellspring of peace that is accessible at any moment, waiting patiently to be tapped into. Yet, we often forget to nurture this inner sanctuary, neglecting the invaluable resource that could serve as a steady anchor in the storm of anxiety.

Nature, in its profound wisdom, beckons us to rediscover this inner reservoir of peace.
