It’s Been 14 Days Since I Joined Medium. Here Are My Results

February is technically my first month on Medium, but it wasn’t a full month. Nonetheless, I will reflect on my (short) journey thus far.

I started my Medium journey on the 15th of February 2022. In 14 days, I have garnered 900+ total views and 190+ followers.

There are many people who probably did better than me in their first month on Medium. Whatever results that I am about to show here, I do not claim that it is good, I am just reflecting on my journey thus far.

To be honest, I am quite pleased with achieving over 900 total views and over 190 followers within 14 days. I have never done online writing before. I never knew how to attract audiences to read what I write. To achieve this many views and followers within a short period of time, I have zero complaints.

Of course, I was able to achieve my first 100 followers so quickly (within 4 days on Medium to be exact) was mainly because of the F4F strategy. Some of you might think it is cheating. Well… I wanted to monetize my articles as quickly as possible, so I hope you understand. You can check out the article that helped me achieve 100 followers within 4 days here:

If you are reading this article of mine, you are probably most interested in how much I earn.

I would like to say I did not earn much. Because firstly, it wasn’t a full month. Secondly, I am very new to the writing community, so probably that’s why I wasn’t able to write viral articles. I am still learning and I hope to earn more over the next few months.

Before I actually show you how much I earn (sorry for the delay!), I will like to share the things I did over the past 14 days.

My Progress

Within my first 14 days on Medium, I published a total of 18 articles. That’s on average around 1.2 articles per day (quick math!). I wonder how long I can keep up with writing at least 1 article per day. I must admit it is not easy, because I am slowly running out of ideas of what to write, and I am about to get busier over the next few months due to studies.

When I first started on Medium, I intend to focus solely on finance-related topics. However, I decided not to focus on one niche only because I would like to appeal to more groups of people. I have since expanded to focus on articles relating to productivity too. You can take a look at some of my articles down below, and if you are interested, you can give me a follow:

Finance-related

Productivity-related

Lots of people on Medium said that it would be great for new writers to publish to publications instead of self-publishing because then your articles will reach a wider audience. I followed this advice, and I mainly write on publications like The Orange Journal (for productivity-related topics) and The Investors’ Handbook (for finance-related topics). If you are interested and haven’t given these publications a follow, I highly recommend you should. There are lots of great articles out there.

My Earnings

I shall not keep you waiting anymore. I will share with you my earnings for my first month on Medium.

Drum roll please…

Boom… it must be underwhelming isn’t it?

$4.53… after 14 days.

Not going to lie, I’m happy with the result.

I have never earned this much from a side hustle before. The last time I tried to side hustle, I earned $0.23 after a month. I was doing Redbubble. So $4.53 is really good for me… at least for a start.

Breakdown of Earnings

It’s only been 14 days, but not all my earnings were from my articles. Someone actually used my affiliate link to sign up for a membership on Medium, and I got $2.01 from it. I really did not expect anyone to sign up using my Medium link, and I was really surprised when I saw that someone actually did (whoever you are, link up with me. I’d love to thank you personally!).

I previously published an article on how to promote your affiliate link. If you are interested, you can check it out here:

Since $2.01 was from referred earnings, it means the 18 articles that I uploaded in February earned me $2.52. Here are my top 3 articles that earned me the most money:

They are not a lot, but as I said, I’m happy.

The Not So Good News

Unfortunately, I’m from Singapore, so I have to pay a 30% tax for my earnings on Medium.

So for the month of February, I will only be seeing $3.17 transferred to my bank account (ouch!).

30% tax is really painful, but I guess it’s better than not being paid! Always look at the bright side, right?

For new writers, when you sign up for the Medium Partner Program, make sure you check whether your country is eligible for tax benefits so that you can avoid paying a high 30% tax like me.

Moving Forward

I love writing, and I will continue to write. I wish to one day be part of the $100-per-month club, and I will keep writing on Medium every day until I reach there (at least I hope I will).

When I first started out on Medium, I was so motivated and excited just by thinking about the money I would be making. Now that I have written 18 articles in 14 days, I realized it is really not easy to produce 1 article per day. I will have to have the discipline to force myself to find time and sit down to write 1 per day, no matter how busy I am. It’s not going to be easy, but I will do it.

Let me unashamedly promote another article of mine. It’s about choosing discipline over motivation.

I think when I have the discipline, I will then be more likely to achieve my goal of writing an article per day.

Hopefully, I will be able to write an article a day over the next few months, and I would love to see the results for the month of March. It will be the first full month for me on Medium.

I don’t think I will do a monthly update on my earnings on Medium since I’m just a nobody earning a small sum that some of you probably could have earn it in one day with just one article (I’m totally not jealous). I will probably just do one more update next month, since it’s a full month, and that’s it.

Once again, those who are interested in reading either finance or productivity related articles, do give me a follow! You will not be disappointed (I hope!).

P.S.: If you like what you are reading, or you are interested in writing an article on Medium yourself, consider supporting me and thousands of other writers by signing up for a membership. It only costs $5 per month, and you have the chance to make money with your writing as well. By signing up with this link, you’ll support me directly with a portion of your fee, it won’t cost you more. If you do so, thank you a million times!
