It’s an Earworm Kind of Day

The story that wrote itself — if I could just get my brain to stop singing along so I could type

Photo by Natalie Cardona on Unsplash

John Whye started it all off. Tuesday morning, I got up and proceeded with my usual morning routine. Every morning, as my brain is waking up, I sit down with my breakfast, check my Medium stats, then go through all my notifications that happened through the night while I was back sawing logs and snuggling with kitties.

John had commented on my story — Finding History in My Roanoke Texas Backyard.

One thing I admire about John is his attitude about life. He always ends his stories with a phrase about us all being connected and I always enjoy seeing that — every time! In his comment to me on this story, he also brought in our connection to everything, regarding the past/present/future. I liked that thought.

It is always fascinating to discover the past history of things that we take for granted, Trisha! We rarely see the link between the past, the present, and the future. But they most definitely exist and are all part of the connection of everything. We all live in a yellow submarine, haha.

But as I responded and clicked ‘reply’, my brain was already singing along.

…a yellow submarine…a yellow submarine….

Thank you for the earworm, John!

The thought crossed my mind about how many earworms I find while reading stories here on Medium. Someone mentions a song title, or a snippet of a tune, and my brain takes off — singing along, sometimes for the next hour or two if it’s a particularly catchy tune.

According to Wikipedia: An earworm or brainworm, also known as sticky music or stuck song syndrome, is a catchy or memorable piece of music or saying that continuously occupies a person’s mind even after it is no longer being played or spoken about.

Once I finish going through all my notifications, and respond to those I need to, next on my morning agenda is going to publish any Good Vibes Club stories that were submitted after I’d shut the computer down for the night.

Tuesday morning I had six stories to read and publish.

I got to Paul Gardner’s story — A Lesson from Public Coughing in a Post Covid World, maybe about twenty minutes or so after I’d been singing Yellow Submarine. Paul shut down that earworm in a flash and replaced it with his own.

While he was playing Yesterday.

Her cough is “here to stay,”

Another day.

Fortunately, we arrived early at the concert to position ourselves inside the exit door for her likely exit.

To a cafe chair just outside the little venue with the door propped open.

All [her] troubles seemed to fade away.

Yesterday…All my troubles seemed so far away…Now it looks as though they’re here to stay…Oh, I believe in yesterday….

My brain was off in another direction, crooning along to another Beatles tune. Only this time, I was thrown back into junior high school, right in the middle of teenage angst!

Until two stories later.

In between there was a story about some life insights. No earworm on that one, thank you very much. But then the next one popped up.

Next up, Gabriella H. wrote -When You’re Feeling Stuck — Remember Why You Write. She had some good thoughts about writing and what benefits writing brings to her life, and then she slid this one in. I didn’t even see this one coming.

I write for similar brains out there so that we can all swim in the depths together… maybe even holding hands and singing “Why Can’t We Be Friends.”

And I was off again with a new song stuck in my brain…

Why can’t we be friends? Why can’t we be friends…why can’t we beeeeeeeeeee…….

Thank you everyone! Three earworms — all in less than half an hour.

Now the big debate was …. Which one was going to take over and rule the day?

I had to leave this one up to my brain to settle out the earworm battle to see which one reigned supreme.

Hey — Supreme…The Supreme’s! Gladys Knight ….new possibilities here…

No! No! Settle down brain. Go back to sleep.

Who needs music strumming along in the background when you’re reading on Medium? I certainly don’t. I just let the earworms keep me humming along.

Okay, I have to admit. War won out. ‘Why can’t we be friends’ kept playing all day. But truthfully that was probably because I listened to that song a lot more in my teenage years over the Beatles. Sorry Ringo, George, Paul, and John.

Here’s three great stories from my three Medium friends mentioned here. Go check them out and say hello.
