Is Selling T-Shirts Online Even Worth It Anymore?

Learning the personalized approach.

Photo by Womanizer Toys on Unsplash

I thought it would be easy.

Just set up a Shopify store, upload some sweet designs, and watch the sales roll in while I lay on a beach sipping a margarita.

And hey, it works for all those fancy “gurus” on YouTube.

WRONG.

I’m clearly exaggerating a bit, but it can still be described as my first attempt at selling t-shirts online.

Turns out that selling t-shirts online is brutal.

I worked my butt off designing shirts, setting up ads, busting out social media posts, and you know how many sales I got in my first month?

Two. From my mom. (Love you, mom!)

But I’m not a quitter.

If those YouTube millionaires could build t-shirt empires, then so could I!

So I kept tweaking my Shopify theme, trying new marketing tactics, and praying for my first REAL customer.

NOTHING.

Just the chirping crickets kept me company late at night as I slaved over my failing store.

I was nearly ready to throw in the towel.

Not nearly. I found that it would be better to focus on something else.

After blowing nearly 500 dollars on that failed experiment, I realized this game ain’t quite as easy as the gurus make out.

But I didn’t quit.

I have closed my Shopify store and opened stores on multiple print-on-demand marketplaces such as Redbubble, Teepublic, and Spreadshirt.

The reason behind it was simply to LEARN what is selling.

Because here’s the thing: when you find a strategy that works, selling printed apparel can be profitable.

So, the lightbulb moment came when I changed how I viewed the business.

Instead of expecting hordes of impulse buyers, I realized I needed to build relationships with customers.

Building trust and loyalty — building a BRAND.

Here are the changes I made in my mindset to view selling designs as a business:

Focus on Quality Over Quantity

For your shop, you only need to upload a few designs, but make sure they are the ones you genuinely feel proud of.

This is a completely different approach I am taking when it comes to selling on POD marketplaces. On platforms like Redbubble, I upload hundreds of designs every month to generate sales.

While those platforms are great starting points, their purpose is to test what people like to buy on t-shirts and similar products and then apply that knowledge to your own shop.

Spent Time Getting to Know Potential Customers

Whether you like it or not, studying your audience is essential. You need to discover what makes them tick.

No more spammy ads shouting “Buy this!” from the rooftops.

This approach is no longer effective.

Instead, you should aim to spark curiosity and demonstrate to potential customers why they need your product.

Double Down on Follow-ups

Sales come from relationships, not one-off transactions.

Building strong relationships with customers is essential for sustainable success. It is through these connections that trust is established, loyalty is built, and repeat sales are generated.

And this is what you want: a customer who is willing to buy from you again and again.

It is not easy, but it is doable with the right strategies and efforts.

This is why I believe that building a brand should be your main focus. By doing so, you can establish loyalty more easily.

Last Words

This personalized approach simply means that you can afford to spend more per order, as you know that customers will come back for more.

Breaking even on small margins is no longer the name of the game.

Of course, the shirts still need to look hot and be priced right. But by connecting with people, you can build a successful online business.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: all these follow-ups and relationship-building take time.

Sure, it’s more effort than just firing and forgetting promo ads.

But once your community grows, word spreads.

Before you know it, you’ve got fans shopping with you again and again.
